"Chen" and I aren't super close. I met him because he was living with one of my good friends (who has since moved away). He seemed like a decent sort, though I'd only ever hung out with him in a group setting.

Last night he, my best friend, and I went out to dinner (he had extra tickets to a tasting thing) and I learned some harsh truth: he wasn't happy in his relationship. I forget exactly how the conversation went, but I said something about how if he was being hurt he really ought to get help, and that we were here for him. My best friend was like, "psh, it's not like a small Asian girl can do much anyway." But thanks to conversations with my bf (who is a fan of the MR stuff) I knew that, when you aren't fighting back because it's so socially unacceptable to hurt girls, that it can indeed be dangerous. So I made sure to say something that indicated it was perfectly possible for the gf to be physically hurting him, and that it wasn't something he should be ashamed of, but it was something that is unacceptable for her to do.

Long story short he ended up showing us some rough looking scars near his neck/collar bone that had come from being scratched up, and said there were more hidden by clothes. My best friend and I are doing what we can to help him out of the situation (it's hard for him to extricate himself immediately, because she is depressed and suicidal), he knows that my guest bed is available any time.

So it's pretty certain that he'll be able to get out and continue on with his life, because we are going to make sure that happens. And while I like to think that this is what would have happened regardless of MR, I think that it played a part in helping me realize female on male abuse is something to look out for :) So, good job fellas.
