Biggest sexual dimorphism? Throwing ability. "Throwing like a girl" is a major thing. Suspected to be evolutionarily linked to hunting.

Also very dimorphic: grip strength.

You mean to tell me that the "Dad strength" grip of death has a basis in science? Neato.

[–]xNOM 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Female athletes have a grip strength comparable to the 25%ile of all men.

Opinion: Sex isn’t a social construct, it’s a biological fact. Denying sexual dimorphism is borderline delusional. Gender quotas in occupations where physical strength is a necessity are costing actual lives every day. Claiming that women cannot become as capable soldiers/ policewomen/ firefighters as men isn’t sexist. Even the outliers than can pass the same standards as men have a higher chance of injury which can contribute to mission failure. An injured female will also need to spend more recovery/ retraining time to be physically/ combat ready compared to a male. A man trained only half as intensively as a woman will still perform significantly better than her. In conclusion, a woman having to pass the same physical standards as men is a compromise I am willing to accept, but we MUST recognize it is still a compromise.

Otherwise, it looks good.

Every now and then there is a debate on who is more “anti-science”, the Left or the Right. I’m not too interested in the details of that, but, a few years ago I expressed my skepticism to Chris Mooney, author of The Republican War on Science, that liberals were somehow reflexively more “pro-science.” I suggested to him, for example, that when it comes to aspects of the biological basis of human behavior, with the exception of homosexual orientation, liberals are highly resistant to accepting any differences across groups because of their adherence to social constructionism. Chris brushed this off, suggesting that the “science wars” were over, and even when it came to evolutionary psychology (broadly construed) the liberal Left had conceded to the best evidence on hand. I was not moved, because I’ve had years of exchange with many liberal Left folk who defy Chris’ assurance to me. This is most notable when it comes to sex differences, which are usually seen as less controversial, and evolutionarily should have some prior expectation due to dimorphism.

To give a concrete example of how far this goes, there are many liberal Left people who won’t even accede to the proposition that men are, on average, stronger in terms of upper body strength than women. A few years ago this came up on social media, where a friend who has a biology background from an elite university, even expressed skepticism at this, when I was trying to get her to be open to behavioral differences between the sexes by starting with something I thought she would at least agree with as reasonable. When I saw the lack of unequivocal acceptance of this point I decided to opt out of the conversation. This was basically face to face with Left Creationism

This is not to say that people are totally in denial. Rather, the standard educated tack by those with progressive tendencies kicks in. There are “problematic” terms which need to be “contextualized,” and “difference” needs to be considered as an expression of socially preferred categories and measurement. After the critical theory verbiage is hurled usually sane people want to run out of the room.

7% shorter is surprising, I thought it would be higher, but then I forget about the Eastern side of the world, which has a more normalized height comparison between both genders.

[–]game_r1 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

On average it's 7%, but on the extreme ends it's higher due to the higher variation caused by the Y chromosome. You will find significantly more women of average height than men of average height.

In the US only 1 in 587 women are 6ft compared to 1 in 239 men being 6'5".

Honest question, can we consider 20ms faster reaction as an actually important difference ?

I see easily why the others can matter or are impressive, but 20ms seems so incredibly tiny....

[–]Vandechoz 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It matters quite a bit in the topic of why girls aren't doing so hot in non-physical competitions like gaming.

[–]IDeliverToPMME_Users 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I guess 20ms can make an actual difference in some games yeah.

[+]Gahaiile 9 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

In a military situation, definitely. I'll give you an analogy: it's like the difference between a ping of 60 and 80 ms in an FPS, it may not seem like that much of a difference, but if you took an average of your K/D at 60, and 80, you'd notice you do considerably better at a ping of 60 ms. It would also probably make a slight difference when driving, or during a surgery. I think though, it's small enough a difference, that if your reaction times actually mattered to a company, they would probably test you on an individual basis rather than just generalize and say "oh well she's a woman, we're not hiring her" :p

Also, for reference, the average reaction time of a human to visual stimuli, is about 250 ms.

[–]IDeliverToPMME_Users 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

the average reaction time of a human to visual stimuli, is about 250 ms.

As I work with computers and the average ping I see is overall <60 (LAN 90% of the pings I do), this kinda pains me.

But it's an average so eh.

Edit: Typo corrected image: http://i.imgur.com/kY6d4AQ.png

The physiological differences between men and women are often vastly understated due to the feminist political agenda. As a result, most people don't know how vast the differences between the 2 sexes really are. It's tiring having to make the same arguments over and over again so I collected them in a single infographic. Feel free to use this image, no need to credit.

You just laid out the best explanation for why women aren't subject to the draft. Well, that and the ability to get pregnant.

[–]hork23 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"You just laid out the best explanation for why women aren't subject to the draft."

No, it is male disposability and gynocentrism that is the best explanation. This post though is why they ought not to be front line combat troops as they will get people killed through their weakness. There is no issue is drafting them for other non-combat positions due to these facts however.

[–]clockworkgirl21 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

More than 80% of the military isn't combat so those physical differences would matter little.

[–]MexicanTeenGuy -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I see no point in posting this. We are physically stronger. So ?

[–]Folamh3 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's surprising the amount of people who think that this is a controversial statement. Just look at all the kerfuffle recently when John McEnroe said the Venus sisters probably wouldn't be able to compete against the best male tennis players. People accused him of sexism, bizarrely.

[–]hork23 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"I see no point in posting this."

Go concern troll elsewhere.

[–]game_r2 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

When feminists stop politicizing how we need more women in the army/ police/ firefighting, when we need significantly less there will be no reason to post such obvious facts. When white knights stop screaming to my face how I will be "manhandled" by a 100lb girl who does bjj, despite having over 100lbs on her, I will shut up about it as well.

When such obvious facts stop being obvious, it's time to educate ourselves. To be honest, despite knowing the differences between the sexes were big, I didn't myself expect them to be that vast. Most people would have you think that men are a mere 30% stronger than women and thus women can easily beat men with focused training. This is a blatant lie, politicians, feminists and popular culture have been lying to our face for decades.

[–]8thling -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I fail to see how this has anything to do with mens rights?

[–]hork23 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Then you fail to realize that sexual dimorphism is important when discussing gender issues. Also, that nearly all societies tends to deny that this biological fact even exists will only lead to harmful policies. Go sit in the corner, dunce, and pick up your thinking cap on the way back before you attempt to virtue signal again.

[–]8thling -3 points-2 points-1 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

"Nearly all societies" clearly you live outside of society. Almost everyone acknowledges that men are stronger, faster, react faster, have better spacial recognition. Don't base your views on society off of the extremists of the internet.

[–]hork23 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Men are also smarter, more compassionate, more responsible, better parents, while women contribute very little to society in comparison, are naturally narcissistic, solipsistic, and childish. But tell people that and they lose their mind, these are the lies we are told.

[–]GiverOfHarmony -3 points-2 points-1 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I am a supporter of equal rights of all people, there is no reason to post this and will only bring chance of sexism in the comments towards men and women.

[–]hork23 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Concern troll, go away.

[–]GiverOfHarmony -3 points-2 points-1 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I'm concerned, but I'm not trolling, I'm being serious.

[–]hork23 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

"I am a supporter of equal rights of all people"

If you recognize that men and women are different then applying the same standards to both is unrealistic. If it is all people you want the same rights given to, then give the same rights to children as we do adults. Or mentally handicapped as we do to the normals. I am giving extreme examples, but you left no caveats, no conditions in which we differ treatment of one group to another.

"there is no reason to post this"

  1. There are idiots like you that continue to say that posting things that show that we are indeed a sexually dimorphic species is a problem.

  2. Since we like to lie to ourselves about women and men, individually and society as a whole, this is an attempt to educate those who have been lied to.

  3. The truth is reason enough.

"will only bring chance of sexism in the comments towards men and women"

Posting facts will cause hurt feelings, better censor it then. I'm guessing you are a woman, I state this because it is typical of women to attempt this method of conflict resolution, i.e. deny reality because someone may say something bad and someone will be "harmed" as a result.

[–]Cazazkq 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're so romantic you look like books.

I hope you have a nice day!

[–]GiverOfHarmony -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

People like you cannot be argued with for the sole and simple reason that you cannot accept an outside opinion. I will not share my gender because that will only change people's perception of my opinion.

[–]hork23 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

"People like you cannot be argued with for the sole and simple reason that you cannot accept an outside opinion."

You are assuming much, to which I would guess you are projecting. As you refused to address any of my statements, you instead retreat. This speaks of your own unwillingness to consider an outside opinion, not mine.

You gave no argument, you merely stated your opinion and didn't bother to defend it. Again, the brush you wish to paint me with seems more apt for yourself.

"I will not share my gender because that will only change people's perception of my opinion."

There is no need and I am glad you will not. I only stated my opinion based on earlier experiences. Your statement though marginally increased my confidence in my conjecture of your gender.

[–]GiverOfHarmony -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I did not want what I said to seem argumentative and I'm sorry if you perceived it that way, but I have no ill intent in what I was saying, can we please move on, I hate arguing with other people.

[–]hork23 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"I did not want what I said to seem argumentative"

Any claim about reality is an argument.

"I'm sorry if you perceived it that way"

This seems like more passive-aggressive garbage, and it's certainly offensive in the manner that those that wish to pursue a more correct view of the world through argumentation is viewed as pitiable by you. It is not, and furthermore it is one of our best methods of finding truth to which you denigrate, are hypocritical about, and view as unnecessary.

"I have no ill intent in what I was saying, can we please move on, I hate arguing with other people."

Capitulation? Further reinforcing my perception of your gender, this is what women when do when in a fight or flight scenario (which men do), they tend or befriend.

I'll continue posting responses as long I as feel like it, you are free to stop whenever you want. Any attempts to placate me by submission will only be viewed with contempt and as cowardice, so don't bother. Remember, you did not state what sex you were so I am treating you like a male, this is the internet afterall.
