Not to toot my own and my ex-husband's horn too much, but I am still convinced that the way we arranged things was the best--we split physical custody 50/50 and had no money change hands between us, but was simply spent directly on the children by the parent they were with at the time--the one of us who made significantly more money than the other was recognized to the children's benefit by paying a larger share of daycare and medical insurance costs, money paid directly to the providers and NOT to the other parent. Bitterness = completely avoided, benefit to the children = maximized.

Child support is about keeping mothers off welfare. It has zero to do with the well being of the child. Mothers on welfare creates bad stats for governments. It didn't matter how often I told the powers that be that the child spent more time with me and that the mother was a heroin addict and a prostitute (despite claiming not to work) and providing evidence of her wages and work places and drug problems my wages were garnisheed and attempts to have my sons welfare checked lead to threats of sending him to a foster home despite the fact I was obviously living a stable life. The Australian Child Support Agency is corrupt.

There are many issues concerning child support.

Sometimes it is indeed very onerous compared to cost of living for the parent paying it, and accountability by the parent receiving it.

I think what bothers me most about child support is how difficult it is to change it when layoffs occur, or when a father wishes to change career to a more interesting, more personallyh rewarding career.

But I would happily pay every nickel if the goddamned fucking state would enforce visitation times.

I'm tired of paying for other people's kids as it is. Taxing everyone excessively to make up for abolishing the current child support system would be a horrendous idea.

Read the title, immediately thought this was a troll post and came here to say so.

Your point is good, but I don't like the idea that anyone except the people making the parenting choices should be held responsible for those choices.

If the family court system really were focused on parental responsibility, then when women put themselves before their families, break up their homes without cause, and deprive their children of the guiding influence of their fathers, the system would not support those decisions with funding, but would instead respond to that selfish disregard for the welfare of the child by weighing the attitude behind it against the mother's side of the custody part of that case.

What is a fair amount of money to pay for child support, taking into account the amount of money the child requires to cover their share of rent/mortgage, their use of utilities, food, clothing, transportation, medical care, etc.?

Let's see some hard numbers and an explanation of why the amount you come up with is a reasonable amount of child support, taking into account the above factors.

It's back door welfare. Same as alimony.

If child support was about the child's well being then the money would be accounted for. As it stands, the recipient of CS payments doesn't have to notify the payee what the money is being spent on. There is also no oversight from the agency that takes the money from the payer.

Going on further, this is all about creating weak children, particularly males, so they are no threat to the existing power structure. Feminists sold there souls for a sliver of silver and this is the result.

If someone is paying child support then they should be entitled to receipts of transactions made using it. Of course the other parent could just spend that money on the child and no other, but it guarantees that a sum equal to the amount paid is being spent on the child- which is something. If it doesn't add up then the payer can appeal to have it lowered or something. Not much extra strain on the courts, and it'll help with directing the money to where it should go.

If it's only about the well being of the child; why not just start holding random, well-off single men responsible for the children of single mothers?

The reason we hold fathers responsible is because the assumption is that they are partly responsible for the kid existing. But, that isn't true any more now that whether or not be a parent is a choice a woman makes about her body....

That's the gaping hole in the pro choice arguments. It's the "my body, my choice" stuff. "My body, my choice, partially your responsibility because my choices resulted in a child" doesn't make any sense.
