I've been floating this idea among my friends, and finally someone said I should post it. I'm new to this, so let me know what you think:

  1. All wealth is split in half, but do not count previous assets. So if you marry with $50K, but then you divorce with $75K, only $25K gets split in half.

  2. Have a priority of distribution in place. In particular, make sure businesses go first to the original owner. So if you have $100K in a house, and $300K in a business, $200K of the business goes to you, and the rest to your partner. This is to minimize the chances that you end up being on the board with your ex-wife. Do the same for other assets that could be problematic (i.e. if you're really attached to your car).

  3. Possession-proportional child support. If you have minority possession of the child, you should only have to pay child support in proportion to how much you possess him or her. So if you see your kid only 2 days out of 7, you should only pay 2/7ths of what is necessary to raise a child.
