psychology has one of the largest gender gaps of any academic discipline in graduation rates, about 70% female 30% male IIRC.

As a Psychologist... at least a person with a B.S. in Psychology from a decent school who is thinking about getting Masters/PhD down the road, I see a number of issues to address here.

My final Psychology thesis (I had a far bigger and better one for Computer Science, my other major) was about how the Social Sciences, or at least large subsections of them, were nothing more than a sham of politics pretending to be science. I didn't focus on the gender gap, but on the classifying of certain sexual attractions as normal and others as mental illness, despite the fact that scientific and historical evidence disagreed with the classifications.

There are fields of psychology that are good and real science, such as those that border computer science and anything on the micro scale (such as physiological psychology). But, the theoretical psychology is in a number of places just pitiful.

All that being said though, I actually found feminist therapy, REAL FEMINIST THERAPY, to actually be a good idea. But what is real feminist therapy? It has the basis that many of our problems are the result of demands, expectations, and limits that are put on us. Not just women, but men as well. Homosexuals, heterosexuals, bisexuals, asexuals, and even people with attractions to socially disagreeable to list here. Parents, grandparents, childless, or even those wanting to conceive. Both the masculine and feminine among us. Even those who suffer from 'simple' disorders like arachnophobia can find a place under real feminist therapy. If anything, the one thing about about feminist therapy is the name, as it quickly becomes associated with the rhetoric of extreme feminist.

While I am not a therapist, I did have to create a personal therapy in one class and I drew heavily from the ideas behind feminist therapy (client centered therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy were my other two inspirations).

But all in all psychology is still a new science. It has gone through extreme shocks, from even a few decades ago when you could do almost anything, even illegal actions, to a test subject to today when to run the simplest of experiments requires insane paperwork (which I have filled out before). It still lacks a good mathematical basis as it is often the fall back science for those who can't do the math needed for chemistry or biology. All through psychology is a cardinal sin of treating ordinal data as interval. Until Psychology gets these issues straightened out, there will still be fertile ground for individuals with political agendas to grow, thrive, and do battled within it.

Interesting article, but I've heard of psychologists on both end of the spectrum (full disclosure: I generally hate everyone in the mental health profession). A friend of mine found out her husband of 20 years was cheating on her. The first psychologist told her that her issues with her mother was driving her husband to cheat, and it was really all her fault. The second told her to make sure she didn't tell friends in the community why they were getting divorced because it would ruin both their reputations and "that's just what men do anyways" and she should get over it. Another friend of mine was told by a psychologist that her boyfriend was verbally abusive to her because she didn't have sex with him enough.

When I went to a counseling session as a freshman, I was told that my desire not to be in any relationships was anti-social and a sign of my hatred of women. I thought it was just because I had a lot of studying to do. I was also told that I didn't think what I thought I thought, because I was being controlled by my privileged position in the Patriarchy. Needless to say, I did not go back to therapy.

Also, keep in mind that some psychologists don't want to put themselves out of business by actually helping their patients. Feminism makes people screwy in the head, thereby ensuring continual profits from people's efforts to "feel better." And some applications of psychology further this purpose.
