This Do

This was on LinkedIn. I used to think videos like these were a warning against bad men doing bad things like harassment etc. But what the campaigners failed to consider is the effect on the men seeing this video. To us it doesn't just show a bad man: it basically reinforces the stereotype of 'all men bad'. There used to be examples like this in the movies: but ones where good men stepped in to stop the bad ones. Like a scene from the film 'City Slickers' in which the trio of protagonists intervene to stop some bad cowboys harassing the female protagonist. Nowadays there s no portrayal of the good man, because of course, women can t be saved by a man. So all we see is the bad man, and this is just telling all us men that we are bad. Not the right message to inspire us to do better.
