Whats funny is now that people aren't getting married and men have checked out of relationships, they have to spend their own money on necessities rather than the woman making these purchases. Companies are now trying to market directly to men, because thats how they have to capture the revenue.

[–]WaitingToBeBanned 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Marriage is on the downturn for everybody and men have not stopped having relationships.

The biggest factor here is that men will now buy products marketed for them which they would previously not have. Could you imagine a body wash commercial for men in the 80s?

[–]rimper 14 points15 points16 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Two words...Pink razors.

[–]ImNotIntoPokemon 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Or, you know, any product with a fragrance that is marketed toward women... like the majority of these examples are marketed toward men because of their fragrance.

[–]Swiggy 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Or lack of fragrance.

[–]elwahrio 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're missing u/rimper's point. The central premise of the "pink tax" argument is that pink razors cost more than blue/grey/green/black razors, and yet women all over the world are happy to pay the premium for the gender identifier. The entire"masculinity so fragile" argument is projection and nothing more.

Also, it happened almost a year ago, why is this story being published now?

[–]privilegechecked85 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Somebody get them to a safe place, stat!

[–]mochacola 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Aren't those products extremely sexist? Imagine toothpaste that claims 'maximum freshness' that's specially for women, or cotton swabs as 'women's ultimate beauty secret'.

[–]Xelipho 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But those already exist, just go to a store.

[–]mrbears 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I assure you, dogs very much have a concept of gender

[–]JimGusa 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't know. My dog can't seem to tell that my leg or my pillow isn't a bitch.

[–]Rethgil 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So from this we can deduct that feminists are also blind to ads targeting themselves and also have no sense of irony? Every single product out there aimed at women does it by appealing to gender related issues totally overtly. Often by portraying men as idiots, sex objects or bad guys. Guess THATS acceptable. No fragile feminist egos there!

[–]Mik3ze 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Of all the dumb things feminist have bitched about over the years this is one of the dumbest.

http://davidthompson.typepad.com/davidthompson/2014/01/the-agonies-of-the-left-are-not-to-be-laughed-at.html

I like me some man crisps. I was eating a packet of polar bear and powertools flavoured man crisps last night when the wife became upset.

"Do you have to eat those in bed?" she asked.

Turns out I do. I have no idea how I put up with that woman.

Anyway, apart from man crisps I also like man-sized tissues, my manly 4x4 car (with amusing rubber testicles on the tow hitch, and the music of Melissa Manchester.

I'm so manly I once got into a fist fight with a peacock at Warwick Castle. Technically the peacock won and I can never go back there or the RSPCA will prosecute, but I did get a good handful of his tail feathers before he flogged me so I count that as a moral victory for man over beast.

So it's a good thing that crisp makers and whatnot sell products to meet manly needs, but why not also cater to feminists? I have some suggestions:

  • Girl Crisps in the following flavours: passive-aggressive, trinkets 'n' bonbons, and topless

  • Lady Laptops - like normal laptops, but with a little vanity mirror attached and preloaded with recipies and pictures of kittens

  • A car that automatically touches up your makeup when stopped at red lights

  • A body pillow shaped like a man for lonely feminists to cuddle up to - comes in Gerard Butler, Antonio Banderas, and a slimline Benedict Cumberbatch model for single beds

Come to think of it, the problem the feminist movement has is that it needs an ideas man like me to be in charge. We'd soon cut through all the pointless gabbing and overcome the Patriarchy.

I did like Ellen’s take on the Lady Pen issue.

Heh. Yes, it’s a silly product and will presumably disappear unless lots of women feel the need for what they regard as a feminine pen. A concept that, I grant you, is perhaps a little curious. What struck me, though, was Ellen’s need to pad this small joke in lame and antiquated boilerplate, much of which - say, unequal pay - is simply inaccurate and misleading. (See, for example, Tim Worstall on this.) Her opening line is also a tad tendentious. She says, sarcastically, “I saw something that made me think we still have a little way to go [in terms of gender equality].” Taken literally, what on Earth might she mean? That for equality to be achieved to her satisfaction, silly products like gendered pens should cease to be? Who gets decide on such things if not the marketplace? Can women not make up their own minds as to how absurd or desirable a thing is?

[–]biscuitgravy 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Will the future be as embarrassed of gender as we are of flared jeans".

Lol, I love how they have deluded themselves into thinking that it will ever be plausible to make genders (which don't exist) useless. Like we're somehow going to "teach" a woman to have penis. Why they think humanity developed biological differences to spite the LGTBQ community, I'll never know. But "gendered" products will be necessary as long as they rely on men to create a society advanced enough to complain about shit like this.

Who is Twitter?

[–]scruffist 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Anyone else start reading that, see 2.39 euros ($2.66) price and go "Damn that's a good deal on Colgate toothpaste!"? It's $4 where I live.

[–]cum_penibus 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The vast majority of floor space in drug-stores filled with products aimed at women? That's oppressive and patronising! How dare you? Also, how am I supposed to be able to afford all these entirely essential products? Pink tax!!

A tiny corner with a few shelves of items aimed at men? Hurr durr look at me I'm a man I'm stupid I need pointlessly gendered products.

[–]HotDealsInTexas 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Remember, kids: gendered marketing towards women is the fault of the men in corporate marketing departments, and the companies selling those products should be mocked and shamed. Gendered marketing towards men is the fault of the male consumers, and men who buy those products should be mocked and shamed.

Ain't equality great?

[–]nzoydwheeler 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This idea has already been roundly satirised (thanks Australia!)

Anyway, it seems to me like the women mocking those gendered products are actually on our side. The very concept of "Man Grenade Bath Plaster" offends me beyond reason.

[–]TheDude41 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Nothing compared to the ridiculously overpriced products "for women" that women buy all the time.

[–]BetterBadIdeas 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm sorry. I can't hear you over the OCEAN OF PINK that is the shampoo aisle while I try to find my damn head and shoulders.

[+]intensely_human[🍰] -6 points-5 points-4 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Downvoted for not being relevant at all to MR issues.

Can we talk about the draft? Or circumcision? How about witch hunt rape trials where men go to prison without evidence? We should focus on places where men's rights are being violated.

There is no right not to have people on twitter make fun of needlessly gendered products. They're right, by the way. Needlessly-gendered products are ridiculous.

[–]porkmaster 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Yeah. But the products started with pink razors and Secret deodorant. Woman targeted items sold well, so companies started making versions of things for men. Ignoring that fact just to bash men in yet another way isn't the most important thing in the world, but we should point it out.

[–]intensely_human[🍰] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

There's a book called "The Feminine Mystique" that makes fun of needlessly gendered products. It was published in the 60s. This isn't something that started with men's products.

[–]porkmaster 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That's what I mean. It started with women's products, but feminists ignore that and bash mens' "fragile masculinity" due to companies' marketing tactics. It's just dumb.

[–]Rethgil 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Its just typical feminist "fragile brains'.

[–]intensely_human[🍰] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well Betty Friedan was a feminist and didn't ignore it but instead wrote that book.

It's a pretty fascinating book. Among other things it talks about how (at least in the 60s), most psychology research was privately owned by ad companies. Kind of a scary concept.

Honestly I think this sub is too focused on what the absolute worst examples of feminists do. I'm more in favor of opposing the companies that come up with this adventure grenade pouf branding.

Not getting made fun of isn't a right, so IMO it's no a men's rights issue. I'm all for going well beyond rights and into engineering male happiness to a maximum degree, but this sub is called mensrights.

And there are problems that actually impact rights and not just feelies.
