As someone who recently moved to the northeast from the northwest and having lived in southern California and South Carolina, there does seem to be a lot of women around here.

I was referring to the dark green streak on the East Coast as the nation's highest concentration, not so much concerning every dark green shape.

Well, you also have to take into account that your first map shows the highest concentration of singles, not all of each gender. It's hard to draw a conclusion on women and money just from that data without knowing the percentage of higher earners who are married.

On side note, I'd always had the impression that California's wealthy area was Beverly Hills... as presented by pop art (music, movies, television) when I was growing up... yet it appears from the map that there is higher income than that in the circle made by the cities around San Francisco bay, and it looks from the census data like Beverly Hills is closer to middle class. Either things have changed dramatically in California, or the portrayal was way off. Insignificant to the discussion, I know... but interesting to note anyway.

Firstly, outside of polygamy, singles numbers should be fairly representative of the gap; it's nothing definitive, just interesting.

Second, the map is by county, and Beverly Hills is in Los Angeles county... but so is Compton. Most of LA is below middle class, so on average...

My reference to married couples vs singles was intended to point to marriages in which one partner is the breadwinner, with the other having either much lower or no income. When this occurs it is more often the woman who is the supported partner, for various reasons, depending on the couple.

However, one thing the discussion does bring up is a point I make frequently in the "pay gap" debate - women can earn as much as men in professional and most labor areas (with the obvious exception being jobs women won't or can't do, like commercial crab fishing.) What comparing the charts you have here with the math used to promote the 77 cent myth shows is that women choose not to, very often because society and/or the law gives us the option of falling back on someone else's income.

Case in point - my husband's ex chose to quit her 40k/yr job to be a stay at home, homeschooling mom while her 2nd husband worked full time, because in quitting she could ask for more child support and the state of Ohio would give it to her, even though quitting her job was a choice. It was a much lower amount, of course, but it was enough to make the choice affordable... for her.

For my family, it meant me working 3 jobs (plus some side stuff) to cover our basic needs, as I had to be responsible for about 80% of our living expenses, since the government was confiscating 60% of my husband's gross income to send to someone who didn't want to work (and his employer was taking out 25% of the gross in taxes, leaving him 15% to bring home.) If I'd chosen to give up (and I could have) we'd have been eligible for all kinds of government assistance - welfare cash, rent and utility payments, food stamps, help with a car. I'd have had to put in hours at goodwill, but not as much as I did working 3 jobs.

For both of us, it was all about the choice whether to earn a supporting income or fall back on someone else's money... to strive for independence, adulthood, and achievement, or live like a child. According to the kids, I seem to be a much happier person, and much more satisfied with my choices than she was with hers when she was not working (she is now... the child support order ended in May.) Where proponents of the current system claim benefit to the children, it looks to me like what it really has done is let society turn the government into the nation's most insidious enabler in order to allow uninvolved people to not feel bad about the perceived struggles of women.

I don't think this implies any correlation. How is this an interesting fact? Also, the original diagram you posted shows single women, not women in general.

Probably doesn't mean much. You can find large concentrations of single men or women regardless of how liberal or conservative that area is. Liberal states like California or Washington have tons of single men, but then liberal places like New York have tons of single women. Conservative Utah, Arizona, and Alaska have lots of single men, but the conservative south also has lots of single women.

Realistically though the % difference in population is probably very very low. 50,00-100,000 in a cities with multiple millions of people you are looking at just a few percentage points.

Maybe because the government pays women money to divorce their husbands and receive welfare, child support, and all the other welfare bullshit we've started.
