No, they are doing feminism perfectly. Feminism is about maintaining the victim status of women. If rape stats fall that weakens their case. The "victim blaming" narrative serves 2 purposes.

Stops you from doing anything to actually prevent rape
Accuses society of oppressing women by making them responsible for their own safety.

As per usual, Reason magazine is being reasonable.

Also, Reason magazine isn't an academic journal so it didn't really look at underlying reason for feminist opposition to date-rape-drug detecting nail polish.

According to Establishment Feminism (i.e. radical second wave and third wave feminism), rape is primarily an act of political terrorism in which a man (acting as an avatar of men-as-a-class) attacks and violates a woman so as to keep women subservient to and afraid of men. The gender roles (created and sustained principally by men, to benefit men) encourage and entrench this pattern.

Any attempt to stop rapes which do not center on addressing the rape-o-genic cultural pattern which causes rape is thus merely an attempt to treat the symptoms, according to Establishment Feminism.

Additionally, rape does have a very unfortunate history of being a crime in which the victim was held responsible for wearing short skirts/'being a slut' etc., which absolved the perpetrator. Thus, there is (reasonably, in my view) a lot of squeamishness over anything which could be seen as making rape 'avoidable' because that would reinforce the idea that the victim is responsible (I've had similar experiences of being victim-blamed, albeit not over rape (thankfully)).

The feminist analysis, however, puts crime down to culture. But how often is rape culture implicated in actual rapes? Lisak would suggest its about 10%, and even in those 10% of rapes the "rape culture" isn't the hardcore "our society endorses rape as a way to punish uppity women" view but rather confused and unclear communication about consent. The vast majority of rapes are performed by sociopaths who know what they're doing.

And, needless to say, rape culture which arguably validates the rape of women actually has a very strong lobby group to oppose it (specifically, feminism). Rape culture which validates the rape of men (i.e. "he had a hardon, therefore he consented!") has only a relatively small amount of opposition.

As writer and activist Maggie McNeill commented on Twitter, I'm skeptical about "solutions" to crimes & social problems "that require establishing a Utopia first."

That's the point we keep missing--SJWs aren't seeking to solve real-world problems. They're seeking Heaven, or Rapture, or Columbia. They don't ask what can we do to solve these problems, they ask who can we blame for not having reached the Promised Land yet?
