I couldn't determine in the article: Are tubal ligations covered for women under Obamacare?

[–]Diesel-66 23 points24 points25 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes

[–]upsidedownbackwards 20 points21 points22 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Contraceptives, including sterilization, are covered only for women as preventive services by ACA-compliant plans. Since sterilization for men is not considered a preventive service under the Affordable Care Act, federal law does not require plans to cover vasectomies. However, eight states (Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Vermont and Washington) require state regulated health insurance plans to cover vasectomies at no cost to the patient. Check with your State Department of Insurance for more information."

[–]Schadrach 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

For every category of women's contraceptive approved by the FDA at least one brand thereof must be covered without cost or copay but most insurance under the ACA.

Tubal ligations are covered because surgical sterilization is an approved category of women's contraceptive by the FDA.

Vasectomies are not required to be covered because they are not for women.

I have always wondered why no one sued on this being obvious sex discrimination.

Many laws are sexist and/or hypocritical. The existence of the Violence Against Women Act(VAWA) is a perfect example. A special law addressing violence against women, even though most violence is committed against men.

[–]shit-zen-giggles 32 points33 points34 points 4 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

oh wow, lefties discovering the sexist discrimination in the 'Affordable Care Act' (aka Obama Care).

oh wow, lefties discovering the relative durth of male contraception options.

All it took for them to notice was overturning RvW.

let that sink in for a moment...

The lefties want single payer healthcare for all so that all healthcare is accessible and affordable.

[–]lasciate 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

The lefties want single payer healthcare for all so that all healthcare is accessible and affordable.

That has nothing to do with whether vasectomies are covered or not. "Lefties" don't care if male-only procedures are "accessible and affordable". If given the choice they would actively oppose it.

[–]Temporary_Spend_3111 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

"Lefties"? If im not mistaken most of the right hasnt cared either. This is less of a political issue and more of a societal issue. Most people dont care about most of mens issues so if a politician brings it up it might as well be carrier suicide.

[–]lasciate 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Lefties"?

I'm responding to a specific comment that uses that specific term in making a specific argument.

If im not mistaken most of the right hasnt cared either.

Irrelevant to the discussion. But also consistent with their long-held beliefs.

This is less of a political issue and more of a societal issue. Most people dont care about most of mens issues so if a politician brings it up it might as well be carrier suicide.

Agreed, but that's off-topic to the above comment chain.

In any case, I'll continue to vote "rightie" until voting leftie isn't empowering people whose idea of 'anti-hate' is just 'hate' with different targets (one of which is part of my identity) ranked in an ephemeral hierarchy dictated to them by their version of a little red book. I'm also a member of a historically oppressed minority, so the idea of endorsing their kind of system in the naive hope that the pendulum won't swing back at me - that one day rich white women won't someday remember that they are rich and white first and foremost, and then use their disproportionate power to come for me while their men sit back and laugh at the irony of it all - fills me with a healthy skepticism of "lefties".

[–]Legitimate-Scar-6572 -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Had the lefties of passed it themselves, vasectomies would fall under "universal".

[–]lasciate 10 points11 points12 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The "lefties" went absolutely nuts when female birth control wasn't going to be covered. Crickets over vasectomies (and condoms, btw) for over a decade. You can lie all you want, we know where "lefties" stand on men's reproductive health issues.

[–]Temporary_Spend_3111 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Lefties dont care if male only procedures are accessible and affordable." Im saying nobody with an ounce of power cares right or left it doesnt matter

[–]Grow_peace_in_Bedlam 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The Affordable Care Act was the right-wing answer to single-payer health care, provided by the Heritage Foundation. Obama would be center-right or at best centrist in most countries other than the US.

Because blocking a woman’s ability to strip-mine a man for resource acquisition is considered “hatred against women”.

Ergo, getting a vasectomy is misogynistic, because it takes control permanently out of the woman’s hands. It’s not like there is a condom that she can poke holes in, or a mind that she can convince that she’s “on the pill” when she really isn’t.

[–]McFeely_Smackup 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

well, this chart should terrify every sexually active man.

49% of women 15-49 are using no birth control

[–]No_Fly8387 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Just don’t do the nasty then

[–]john35093509 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So, abortion is not required? Celibacy for all?

[–]No_Fly8387 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I wish more people did abstain from hedonism and did something constructive. I think people would feel a lot less depressed and more fulfilled but what can you do

[–]TextDependent6779 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

so, what you're telling me is that biology dictates women are primarily responsible for BC because its easier to develop female contraceptives, but that they actually expect men to take responsibility over contraception/be accountable for it?

[–]McFeely_Smackup 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, that's not even close

well that thread is wildly toxic for no particular reason

[–]Viesegel 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

They are always complaining about doctors refusing to perform the procedure on women, but according to the CREST study, there's a significant amount of patients with regret, especially when it's done young women (under 25). About 40% of these women have regrets within 15 years.

Regret of male vasectomy is much lower.

[–]TextDependent6779 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Regret of male vasectomy is much lower.

because its one of our only choices. if we want sex, its the only really reliable one.

You might think i am a doomed massochist for getting into these posts, but, like... they not particurally hiddent.

[–]WingsofSky 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

When you whine and complain all the time. You generally get what you want.

[–]TeddyMGTOW 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

How come a bill based birth control ain't be available for men? One we control..that would be a nuke bomb and level the playing field...and yes I know someone will chime in and say just take gear..lol nah I will pass on that.

[–]TextDependent6779 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How come a bill based birth control ain't be available for men?

how come a male pill doesn't exist? it's a lot harder to stop millions of sperm, especially without severe consequences (e.g., inflicting depression).

[–]PimpingShrimp 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

More money for providers. We need everything covered for everybody free at the point of service regardless of whether you are a man or a woman. Obamacare (Romneycare) is a failure.

[–]SpecialistShoe1207 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

because birth control is used for medical reasons as well while vesectomies aren't. i thought it was obvious 💀

[–]Lice138 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don’t feel like birth control is “health care” any more than haircuts are.

[–]Yung4Yrs 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Side, but related note. Anybody considering a vasectomy PLEASE!! Do research on long-term complications. A minority of patients, but a decade or two out? Horrible. Easy concept: Just think of a sprinkler in your back yard. You never turn off the hose bibb and then put a hose clamp on it till the water cuts off. Go back and check on the hose 20 years later. It won't be pretty.
