The simple answer is that feminists keep making false accusations, while claiming false accusations are rare.

[–]Kingpink2 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

it shouldn't matter whether false accusations or rape is rare or not. Both affect the people victim to it and the affected people need to be taken seriously.

[–]GenderNeutralLanguag 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (26 children) | Copy Link

This isn't a good answer. The reasonable estimates for false accusations are in the 40 -60% range. If the just selected at random, half of the high publicity accusations would be true.

It is because controversial cases are what make it into the media. Had "Jackie" actually been raped at the fraternity as she claimed and reported it to the police, the men involved would have been arrested within days and convicted within a month. If her story was true then there would have been mountains of forensic evidence that prove what happened even without her testimony. The story of "Rapists went to prison" wouldn't have garnered much media attention.

Then stories like Mattress girl are at best murky. There is lots of reason to believe her and lots of reason to disbelieve her. This actually having two sides to the story generated the talk that lead to media attention that lead to more talk leading to more media attention.

The reality isn't that false accusations are as common as it would seem looking at the media (nearly 100% in the past 12 months), but that the media focuses on cases of false accusations/edge cases as click bait.

[–]paashpointo 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (25 children) | Copy Link

I find this point very valid why we see this disparity, but I do have 1 question, playing solely devils advocate here, what is the "lots of reason to believe her" based on what has been reported?

[–]GenderNeutralLanguag 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link

A great many specifics of her claim are verified and not contested. She and Paul did engage in sex, that is not disputed. That this and other aspects of her claim can be verified gives reason to believe her.

It is worth noting that with all of the information both the school and the police found where less than 50% sure of her claim. The "lots of reason to believe her" didn't even get to a preponderance of evidence standard.

[–]paashpointo 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (23 children) | Copy Link

So they both agreed to sex which means not rape? No. He said sex.She said rape. That is the claim. The claim is not a reason to believe the claim. What are "lots of reasons to believe" her in the story of her being raped?

[–]GenderNeutralLanguag 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (22 children) | Copy Link

You are rather making my point for me. The issue is contentious. The contentiousness of the issue is what garnered media attention.

I'm not going to waste my time or yours trying to explain "the other side" of how this is contentious. The very fact that your badgering for "lots of reasons to believe" and trying to dismiss the reasons I present show precisely how and why the issue got big enough to garner media attention.

[–]paashpointo 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Things can be contentious without good or rational reasons for them to be. The only reason I saw to believe her story, as it first printed was because we were offered zero exculpitory information. The event itslef seems pretty clear. For whatever reason she lied from front to back about almost every possible thing she could lie about.

Trayvon vs George Zimmerman, there is a good example of an actual case where there are "lots of reasons to believe" each side has a valid case, even those that feel george zimmerman was innocent acknowledge he probably should have decided to stay in his vehicle. And even those that feel trayvon was mostly the victim acknowledge he should have stayed at his dads house after arriving instead of going back out for whatever reason he decided.

Witnesses other than trayvon and george, have george on top or on bottom. Witnesses have george screaming or trayvon screaming help. etc.

In this case, we have her claim, and almost every piece of evidence goes against her claim to the extent it possibly could.

[–]MasterGoshinki 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Well, after reading through a version of the events, I will say that I did find Paul to be rather suspect based on other accounts of sexual assault on other people (another girl and a guy)..I'm not sure whether to believe these accounts but that honestly made me suspicious

Edit: I'm not saying I think she is not lying, but that made me a bit less sure...

[–]paashpointo 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Master, Thank you for responding to this to answer the other persons question. I must confess I had forgotten about the initial reports of other sexual assaults as at least a reason to believe the story, and while I still think the evidence would be weak at best, you have at least provided some in a vacuum that might indicate his guilt.

[–]Anonymoose15 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

What did she lie about? Look both sides of this need to realize non-prosecuted rape claime != false rape claim. There are plenty of cases where there is no way to determine if a rape actually happened. The feminist side needs to realize that these are not prosecuted not because there is some rape culture inclined to let men get away with it, but because prosecutors aren't going to waste their time with something that comes down to a strict he-said she said, and that crimes aren't prosecuted on that testimony alone. And mens rights need to understand that just because a prosecutor declines to prosecute (because a lack of preponderance of evidence) that that doesn't mean the woman wasn't actually raped.

[–]paashpointo 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Ok, I agree lack of prosecute does not equal false accusation. before I go spend time on this, are you of the belief she said no statements that were later demonstrated to be untrue? further, if I show you one will your stance change on this specific issue? Because I assure you, if i am unable to find one, because I am thinking of a different case or whatever reason, I will be changing my stance on this.

[–]Anonymoose15 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Saying something that was later demonstrated to be untrue is different then lieing. Example: You witness a traffic accident and a week later are asked to recall it to the best of your ability. In your recollection you a pretty certain you remember the at fault person was talking on their cell phone. Later it is determined from video evidence that the person was not talking on their cell phone. You were not lieing about your recollection. I'm already inclined to think she was not raped, but may believe herself to have been raped. I think the situation is that the law and school didn't see it that way, and she should not have been allowed to carry her mattress to graduation

[–]paashpointo1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I agree with you that saying something she believed to be true would not be a lie. I am asking you if you feel there were things she said that were deliberate falsehoods that she knew to be deliberate falsehoods concerning this case.

[–]Anonymoose152 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

no, I don't think she's lieing, for some reason she thinks she was raped

[–]paashpointo1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Ok. I must confess my brain was thinking of the uva gang rape when u started even though I was talking about both earlier and matress woman primarily.

I will agree that mattress girl has not been caught in a lie although she has her own set of issues.

I personally feel she is acting on an agenda, although that is just a no evidence based gut.

I agree based on all facts of that case that have come out it seems less than credible but not actually a fabrication.

[–]GenderNeutralLanguag -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The point was the contentiousness of the situation. You are agreeing with my point that it was contentious.

I'm not going to waste your time or mine trying to defend an accusation that people with much better information than me determined to be more likely a false accusation than an actual rape.

[–]Waylandyr 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

... But you aren't showing any reasons, only that she claimed rape.

[–]paashpointo 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

This is what I said, but apparently that proves his point.

The bible is true and the lots of reasons to believe it are it claims it is true.

The quran is true and the lots of reasons to believe it are it claims to be true.

The napkin religion is the one true religion because it says so on the napkin, and that is also the evidence for its truthity is the claim itself.

[–]GenderNeutralLanguag 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Exactly.

It is the different factions arguing over their versions of "the truth" that makes enough noise to garner media attention.

ISIS does this with the Quran.

The Westburo Baptist Church does this with the bible.

The Cult of the Flying Spaghetti Monster does this with it's blatant parodying of every other religion.

You don't need to understand ISIS's interpretation of the Quran to understand that it's controversial enough to garner media attention.

[–]paashpointo 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

But I dont need media attention to say whether there is or isnt "lots of reasons to believe". I see zero reasons to believe regardless of how strongly others believe in that stuff for example. There is NO reason to believe her version of the story occured. NONE. Not LOTS. That might be contentious or politically incorrect to imply, but I challenge anyone to show me reasons to believe her story. Her stating it , is not in fact a reason to believe it. That is the claim. Reasons to believe the claim are by definition located outside the claim.

[–]GenderNeutralLanguag1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You have asked the same question 5 times now. I am going to give the same answer I've given 4 times already.

I'm not going to waste your time or mine trying to defend an accusation that people with much better information than me determined to be more likely a false accusation than an actual rape.

YOUR inablility to let this drop is why enough of a stink was raised that matress girl became national news.

[–]paashpointo1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

So 2 people trying to discuss something on a message board is why it made national news? You made a statement of which I agreed by and large. I asked for some clarifying information based on one of your remarks, which you dogded admittedly 4 times already, and that helps your case? It must be right to have no matter what you do confirm your point.

If you would have provided evidence, that would have confirmed your point. The fact that you didnt and I kept asing for it. Just asking for the evidence confirms that this should be a story?

The only reason this story should be famous was because of how willing america is to believe every claim of rape, all the while claiming there is this culture of rape and no matter how many times these sorts of things fall apart we still pretend that all men are evil rapists and all women are incapable of making 1 single rational thought if they have smelled alcohol in the last month.

And just to be clear, if you arent going to "waste your time or mine defending the accusation....." then you probably shouldnt make statements like "LOTS OF REASONS TO BELIEVE", because you just might be asked to defend that statement. That was your statement. There can be lots of reasons to believe something, such as trayvon or george zimmerman, and still respectfully disagree about the conclusion. I have my own opinion on that event, but I acknowledge the other side in fact does have lots of reasons to believe their side has merit. This case once looked at with any neutral lens appears to have no or minimal reason to believe any form of sexual assault occurs, not just "not enough evidence to prosecute".

[–]GenderNeutralLanguag1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

If I thought that there was a double plus good way of phrasing the reasons that you would understand, I would. The semantics around the reasons have been dramatically tainted and I don't care to try and play word games.

[–]paashpointo1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Look, I am not after word games. The other perosn listed some reasons, and i acknowledged them. You have refused to. Dont act like I am asking you to provide some sort of evidence to something you didnt claim. the reasons might not outweigh the other side, and I am fine with that, I wanted to know from a neutral perspective what were the lots of good reasons.

(the other guy listed previous sexual assault reports as an example)

I didnt debate him about it or discuss the merits of those claims. That was not my goal. I truly want to know what the reasons would be to believe her. even if they arent strong enough to sway an opinion after all the facts in, they should be easy to produce.

And with all due respect(i mean that seriously not in a talledega nights sort of way) you seem to be playing word games. You made a statement, then defended it by saying the contentious nature itslef was reason to believe etc. I just wanted the reasons which you claimed their are lots of. You have admittedly said you arent going to provide them for quite some time now, and that is fine, but dont act like you have them all ready to go, but for semantics. no one is trying to trick you semantically, again, I agreed and upvoted your original post and havent downvoted a single thing you have said.

[–]GenderNeutralLanguag1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I know your not trying to play word games, but that's what will happen. Phrases like "Listen and Belive" have turned what should be a really simple point to make into a semantic mine field. Your not after word games, but it IS word games.

Also, the contentious nature it's self is not reason to believe the rape accusation. You misunderstood me there. Your dogged pursue of "lots of reasons to believe" show this to be a truly contentious issue and that proves my original point of contentiousness getting attention.

[–]paashpointo1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

could you just give me the benefit of the doubt and list some of the lots of reasons to believe, that if they were in a vacuum without rebuttal they would be reaons to believe? Her claim is the cliam. that is not a reason to believe. What other than her claim is in any way a reason to believe?

So far I have received 1 reaosn from someone else? I didnt argue it. i didnt semantic it. I upvoted them and thanked them.

I agreed with all of your original points. I just feel you overstepped with your statement and would be glad to be proven wrong.

Reddit proves me wrong all the time and I adjust my world view as a result.

[–]GenderNeutralLanguag2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Her claim is the claim and that's not reason to believe it. She could have claimed Micky Mouse or Stalin Raped her. No reason at all to believe that either of them raped her, even if she claimed they did.

Aspects of her claim are verifiable. That the claim was against a real person that really exists in proximity to her is a verifiable fact. That this point is true supports aspects that can't be verified. The claim was of rape. It has been verified and is undisputed that intercourse occurred. Again a verified fact that supports aspects that can't be verified. Every piece of her story that can be verified makes the rest of the story more believable.

Her claim is the claim and alone isn't reason to believe her. That her claim in consistent with verifiable facts is reason to believe her. It's worth noting that her claim is also inconsistent with reality in many places and these are reasons to disbelieve her. As a whole her claim is not believable, but there are lots of places where her story does match reality and each one is a reason to believe her.

[–]paashpointo1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Ok, thank you for those reasons.

[–]MaestroLogical 14 points15 points16 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Largely because it became not only profitable, but trendy, to damsel for attention. Once a few learned they could not only get away with outright fabrication but could also jump start careers by doing so... all bets were off. This created a culture in which young girls actively seek out situations that will later paint them as 'victims'

Once that culture was ingrained, the establishment ran with the narrative as it fit the current agenda and Viola! Fake stories everywhere, everyday, with retractions swept under the rug.

[–]Mylon 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This sounds like stories of raising your hand in the middle of a firefight in Veitnam. If you get shot in the hand you get to go home with a relatively minor injury. Engaging in risky behavior on purpose because the system rewards you for it.

[–]bloodshot_eyes 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Quite. If you look at the SJW reasoning, you will find that they refuse to allow anyone to participate in a group who is not a member of that group. Thus, only black people may speak on black matters, disabled on disabled matters, and so on. What's the biggest cash-cow of the feminist/SJW world? Rape. Thus if you want to participate in the most lucrative sphere; if you want a place on the highest cross on the hill, you must have been raped.

There are some that want it so badly that they're willing to lie in order to obtain the precious social collateral to participate in the rape discussion. Fortunately (for them) they have established a taboo proscribing any and all questioning of the veracity of rape claims, thus making the lie easier to execute.

It's a really fucked-up system they've established.

[–]cuteman 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Cult of the pseudo victim and apathy towards evidence and facts.

Emotional bias has already lynched the accused in the court of public opinion while the truth is still in the parking lot looking for a space.

apathy towards evidence and facts.

But... But..

[–]Gstreetshit 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because they are mostly lies?

There was a video posted a couple of weeks ago that basically said, if the accusation is very big in media, the victim going all over the place going interviews and the like but no police involvement. That its false. He had some great arguments for why that is the case. I wish I could find the video.

[–]GayLubeOil 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because all public rape accusations are false. Real rape accusations are handled by the legal system not some half retarded bitch parading around with a mattress. The same retarded bitch who repeatedly sent "fuck me in the ass" facebook messages to her alleged rapist.

I wouldn't go so far.

I would sentence them to the same amount of jail time a rapist would get if he/she committed the crime.

[–]pirate6728 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Old Testament, Mosaic Law. If you testified against your neighbor, and upon examination your testimony proved to be false-- you faced the penalty that the person you testified against would have faced IF the case against him had proven to be true. Eye for eye, hand for hand, life for life---

Today we don't cut people's hands off or put people's eyes out-- but time served in prison--- yep, that could be the same.

Long odds against it ever happening of course. No way that the feminists or their white-knight supporters would ever sit still for an accuser to face a long sentence if it turned out that her evidence was fabricated and her tale of rape was a lie to get a man into trouble because he didn't dance to her tune.
