That sounds fantastic. Except when they get to the talking part it's all "this is about women, shut your mouth Shitlord!".

So, no. Men don't need Feminism. Actually, men are injured by feminism because feminism co-opts the discussion about equality and doesn't allow actual discussion.

The comic may try to be caring but it ultimately diminishes men's issues by treating them as no more than a side-effect of women's issues.

The comic's argument is simple: Our culture is a patriarchy and thus it hates both female-bodied persons and feminine traits. This means men get bullied for being feminine.

This argument, however, is false. Do women get bullied for having feminine traits? No, they're praised for these traits.

Are men who have "feminine" traits socially treated like women? Does "don't hit a girl" save a "girly" guy from being beaten up? Does "women and children first" save "girly men" from going down with the ship? No, of course not; we all know femme/flamboyant gay men are treated worse than masculine gay men, but society doesn't see them as women (if it did, femme gay men wouldn't be the primary target of gay-bashings).

A man who isn't traditionally masculine is not a woman by society's standards; he's a nothing. He is a "boy" rather than a "man" or a "woman" by traditional gender roles.

Society does not hate femininity per se; it hates the lack of traditional masculinity within males (it also has a love-hate relationship with traditional masculinity in general but that's a different issue). Men who are not traditionally masculine are not socially feminine, they're socially neutered (see "dickless" and "grow a pair" and "man up!" for proof).

And hence, men's issues cannot be seen as an epiphenomena of women's issues.

Sums it up well. If we really lived in a patriarchy which "hates feminine traits", calling a woman manish would be a compliment, which clearly is not the case.

I hadn't seen this before. It really is rather good.

Sounds like a woman femsplaining what it's like to be a man.

Actual men are concerned with things like going to college and being accused of having sex with a woman who later regrets it, or being divorce raped after marriage.

It's a feminist propaganda piece. The final statement says something about "listening to each other" but evidently the author has never listened to any man ever, or any MRA of either sex. The list of "issues" is pathetic and made to make it sound as if men have no real issues so the author can pretend that men are not worse off than women. in some cases the "male issues" are just vehicles for moaning on about how bad women have it.

Frankly even if you limited the issues only to emotional issues and excluded all legal and institutional discrimination from consideration, the list still excludes the biggest emotional issues facing men.

It's not a list of male issues as seen by men. It's a list of issues made up by a feminist to make themselves feel better about being in a hate movement. But then I suppose the "issues" feminists go on about for women is bullshit too.

Finally even if we took these "issues" at face value then how the hell is feminism a solution to them? How is an anti-male hate movement that despises men and spreads disgusting lies about them going to help? having said that the title, "Why men need feminism" was probably written by someone other than the person who drew the cartoon.

This comic is disgusting. Clearly whoever made it doesn't understand the issues of male rights.

[–]BuzzinFr0g6 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Isn't virgin shaming a huge part of feminist responses to those (especially men) who refuse the feminist label?

[–]DrFriendless 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Is there a cartoonist out there who can produce an equivalent "why women need mens' rights"?

[–]BlacknOrangeZ 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If the dominant Feminism was actually about any of this, the world would be a much better place.

[–]Scimitar66 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why men need feminism a comprehensive gender movement which understands and opposes sexism against both men and women.

[–]theozoph 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

... Because women who genuinely think men have problems and that feminism harms women by painting them as eternal victims are infiltrating Comics Expos and need to be run out ! /s

[–]Elvick 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And the MRM are the ones they say try to do the "what about the menz" shit.

Even in a comic meant to focus on men, it still has to make women the primary victims. It's not that men aren't "manly" enough, but that they're "like women" and we all hate women sooooo much that men being like them is bad. Think of the womyn. Women are the real victims of a boy being told he's acting like a girl. Just as men are the real victims of a girl being told she looks like a boy... oh wait.

And I've struggled to find a good way to put this, but most men who dress like women are jokes. I have nothing against it, but for drag queens that's a joke. I'm sorry. But it's done for amusement and entertainment. And that is how people take it too.

I can't take it as anything other than a joke when a man with facial hair is dressing and acting like he's a woman. I can't. Especially with the over the top makeup and hair.

If you actually put in effort to convince me you're trying to look like a woman, then I'll take it seriously. But if you look like a clown in a dress, no. Certainly not a politically correct thing to say, but meh.

The comic looked more like a push for equality not femanism.

[–]YetAnotherCommenter 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I know it looks that way, but you miss the sleight-of-hand which the comic employs.

The comic argues that men who are bullied are bullied for being girly, and that being bullied for being girly is a consequence of a culture which hates women.

Ergo, the comic argues that men's issues are just a side-effect of the hatred of women.

This is the "patriarchy hurts men too" argument, which marginalizes men's issues and diverts the discussion back towards women's issues.

So whilst the comic at least gives off the impression of being sympathetic to men (and the person who drew it may actually genuinely care about men), the argument that is being made has the practical effect of diminishing men's issues by treating them as no more than an epiphenomena of women's issues.

[–]ParanoidAgnostic 13 points14 points15 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It took an issue men face and turned it into evidence of female victimhood. Definitely feminism.
