The difference is that these guys are entering into an entirely different social structure. With no women, the guys on the bottom rungs replace them as the targets of sexual dominance and violence... women are born into that subtextual role, guys who become "prison bitches" are thrust into it as adults.

I think the best way to reduce prison rapes, though, is to make reducing it a higher priority for guards. As it is, it's kind of accepted as something that just happens (or something that is deserved if the victim has committed a particularly egregious crime) so policing and punishment of that behavior is minimal.

I'll watch the whole thin later, but first thoughts from the first few mins is, this is people who have experienced a trauma telling their stories. Very useful for people going into the same situation.

Edit: 14 minutes in, this is very good. This is exactly what someone new to the prison system needs to help them adjust and stay safe. I would like to see other videos like this for particular groups or situations involving violence or assault against others or environments as alien to normal life as the prison system. The demystification, especially from long time inmates is particularly good.

Edit: Finished it. Final thoughts, the list of ways to report at the end and firm note of it not being snitching were very good. Fear of reprisal or shaming are a reason in general why rapes aren't reported. And no doubt in prison it's even bigger since without intervention you can't escape. The threat from retaliation is even more acute.

I watched it. There was a very important line one of the inmates said that I think sums up a lot about personal responsibility:

"I can control me. I can't control you."

This is the whole point about personal safety. If you live in a place where there is a risk of crime, not taking responsibility is asking for trouble. No one deserves to be victimised but criminals don't care. So it is best to ensure your safety by controlling things as best you can. Don't get passed out drunk or get high with strangers. It is best to be aware of your surroundings, get away from people who make you feel uncomfortable and speak to someone if you feel something is wrong. It is a good idea to have friends around when you are inebriated and a designated driver is not a bad idea either.

The entire video is about being proactive and being safe in a very dangerous environment with testimonials from prisoners. These guys are dispensing useful advice. It would be stupid to ignore it if you find yourself in those situations. You can blame the offender all you want but it won't stop predators from attempting to victimise someone. It would be a good idea to know how to protect yourself.

It is not a bad video, and by extension a similar one could be done for young women, especially those of college going age who may find themselves partying a lot. There are ways of improving your safety, and while it is no guarantee that you won't be targeted, it is probably better than making it easier for predators to strike.

I doubt the universities would be sold on the idea of a personal safety video for women. They'd prefer to send men to classes to teach them not to rape. The irony is that women are not powerless and rapists don't care. They will attend and still victimise someone. Feminists getting annoyed at this is like complaining about getting attacked by wild animals when you head out to the wilderness, when you have not bought any survival gear or weapons. If predators exist, at least arm yourself before venturing out into the world.

The advice in this video isn't good. It comes from the perspective of the authorities, and the prisoners who appear in the video seem to be protective custody inmates. Better advice would come from less "cooperative" prisoners in general population, but they would be unlikely to participate or be allowed to participate in a project like this. Basically, the advice of those prisoners would likely be to physically attack, but not kill, another prisoner who tried to make a gay rape move. Obviously a government-backed PSA video won't give that advice.

Future_space_boobs said it better than I could; however, I'd like to weigh in anyway because this post is awesome.

The video features survivors telling their stories in an honest, nonjudgmental fashion. The video's YouTube comments section features this thoughtful critique: "Givin' up y'ass fo potato chips & candy. Can you really prevent that stupid?" The YouTube commenter in question has retained an important point made by the video. And yet, at the same time, he spun it to humiliate the men who get tricked by small kindnesses coupled with gradual boundary violations. That comment is true victim blaming.
This video is very useful to men and women. As a female, a lot of the advice contained in it is spookily familiar, not just because it reminded me of popular real-life stories -- the book Fish and the movie Noem My Skollie ("Call Me Thief") -- but also because of the parallels with sexual assault outside of correctional settings.
I have mixed feelings on this front. Refer back to future_space_boobs post for a more thorough explanation of why a lot of this is old information for most women. Women also tend to be more sensitive to unsolocited advice about how to avoid sexual assault -- same way that people with thyroid conditions might be sensitive to unsolicited about how not to gain weight. Whether or not a woman follows this advice consistently, you can still pretty much assume she's heard it.
I think making a similar video for male and female children would be very effective. In my all women's undergrad, we did actually get an orientation about how to avoid, deterr, and report sexual assault (we were across the street from a co-ed campus.) It was a lot about leaving drink unattended and about how it counts as rape if you're too intoxicated to consent -- all old news at that point. This video was awesome because it talked about subtle boundary violations, the role of drugs, and how sexual assault can arise from a perception of owing or being owed for something. Plus, it was men speaking based on lived experience which, to me, was very touching. I'd actually rather my son or daughter watch this than sit through the orientation I attended, even though a lot of it wouldn't apply directly. The video beautifully describes the grooming process that people use in prisons, in the workplace, in bars, outside of schools, and within families.

I wouldn't consider it exactly victim blaming. To me, the problem with victim blaming is that it normalizes rape, by assuming it will naturally happen if you do certain things and is sympathetic towards the rapist. That's a problem because society isn't, and shouldn't be like that, but a building full of criminals is like that, I think inevitably.

I don't know if it's useful, from my probably very inaccurate view of prison, I'd assume it is. I was told that in prison you'll only get fucked up if you "ask for" trouble. If you keep to yourself you shouldn't face any problems.

For 3, No. M first answer should explain why.

No, because if a woman has an already cautious mindset, then she will avoid going into dangerous situations, if she doesn't, then she won't. People telling her it's dangerous won't change that
