Often I see people bring up studies as if they are some sort of fact and carry a significant amount of weight beyond the anecdotal evidence they already believe. On the other side, I often see people claim the need for evidence through some sort of scientific study for a statment made. However, studies on studies (the irony, I know) seem to show studies aren't the end all-be all of answers. They are very much the opposite, especially in psychology, and behavioral science. Links:

It seems like there is a heavy amount of bias to create both novel and extreme results. This is in the addition to having a lack of control such as in a laboratory setting. This probably explains why there is a study for everything depending on the bias you have. Journals also tend not to publish repeated experiments that show negative results. What does this mean? I guess it depends how much you want to continue to believe in faulty science. TRP and TBP are both horribly guilty of this. They just like to pick and choose which ones to agree with to promote their cause. I think we need to go meta on this issue and discuss why it's even worth a damn to continue posting these studies which continue to support all sides of the coin depending on the bias you choose. Obviously, sometimes they have to be correct, how do you know which? "Science" appears to be failing to produce results that are reproducible, appropriately controlled, and in the end, singularly decisive.

Basically, I think the stuff we debate and talk about here is mostly not good science. It's barely science to begin with. Finding a study that disagrees with my opinion doesn't make you right. Asking for a study that disagrees with your opinion is just the same. It just makes you good at googling or proves how capable of a searcher the person you are debating is.
