Shit like this infuriates me. I can't understand why men's parental rights always seem to be shit.

If a women gets pregnant, the man has no fucking choice but to follow what the woman wants. Essentially, his life is in her hands!

A child is a huge commitment and one person shouldn't be able to make a decision that will impact another's life such as putting a child up for adoption without the fathers permission.

[–]tannerdanger 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

As a new father this terrifies me. How is it remotely legal to do this? Why would the father not be offered full custody rights before giving the child up for adoption? The ex-mother must have been offered money by the adopting parents.

[–]anxdiety 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Honest answer? From someone who has personal experience. Here in Ontario at least there is no law or anything on the books that a mother has to inform, name or anything else related to the father. I found out 10 years later after my ex gave my daughter to her mother and then my daughter was passed off to my ex's aunt who kept and raised her. When I went through the legal system the term thrown at me as I got fucked over was "defacto custody".

[–]tannerdanger 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This is absolutely terrifying. How is this remotely ethical? Shouldn't the court default to giving custody to the father and if he also chooses to have the child put up for adoption THEN you go through this process? I'm sorry you had to go through that and I can only hope our system here in the states is better but i doubt it.

[–]anxdiety 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fixing the problem is extremely complicated. How do you know who the father is if the mother refuses to name them or doesn't know? DNA test all newborns for a lineage registry? That creates a whole slew of problems.

I'm just biding my time as I intend to outlive both the birth mother and guardian and find solace in that I will literally shit on their graves.

[–]ClassyBurn 14 points15 points16 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Good. I hope this goes to the Supreme Court and parental rights are deemed equal between the parents. If these gender roles were reversed, people would be outraged.

Of course, the argument from my outraged sisters will be... well what if I want an abortion and he doesn't? It's my body. Well that's the same as him wanting you to get an abortion and you having a kid anyway. You are both parents and both need to have rights as such.

Shouldn't it work both ways? I think so.

[–]MayorScotch 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You're saying that a guy should be able to force a woman to have an abortion? That's so fucked up. Dudes could just go around getting girls pregnant and forcing them into abortions with no health risks to himself.

I agree that this dude deserves his baby back. It's especially fucked up that this girl will get to see her kid whenever her family visits the adopting family or vice versa and he doesn't get shit.

[–]11schlge 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A guy should not be able to force a woman to have an abortion. However, if the guy states openly that he doesn't want the child, he shouldn't have to pay child support.

[–]ClassyBurn 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No I don't think there should be force from either side. Sorry if didn't get that across.

[–]LaReddoux 11 points12 points13 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

a simple Google search would’ve told the father the steps he needed to take

What the hell do you Google at a time like this?

[–]Elune_ 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

He didn't even know that the mother put her up for adoption either, so what the fuck was he supposed to do? See the future?

[–]throwawaylifespan 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Would it be correct to say that the adoption would mean mum has no liability for child support, whereas father having custody means she does?

[–]MuaddibMcFly 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

That would be the rational thing, but...

[–]throwawaylifespan 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Sadly, a genuine question; not from that neck of the woods! Really? FFS.

[–]MuaddibMcFly 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I honestly don't know. There are far too many cases where women are somehow slightly more equal in their equal application of the law...

[–]throwawaylifespan 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I hear you! Not many women appealing for sentencing equality (for the same crime) here at least!

Ok, so I'm gonna share a story and I'm cool with the downvotes. My sister isn't an awesome mom, started getting pregnant at 15 and had 3 pregnancies by the time she was 18. She kept the first two and lived off my mom because she's a deadbeat. By the way three different baby daddies, and only 1 of them is a good guy. So pregnancy three happens to a guy who's also a dead beat, abusive lay about and my mom couldn't afford to raise a third grandchild. So her option was adoption. She had to go to UT while dude was in jail (I think) because he had no say in the matter, like the article, because he's a manipulative ass hat . To talk to him about it even now he puts up this awesomely fantastic cover of how heart broken he was about it. He's seriously the biggest piece of shit, and so is she. They got back together had another baby who's grown up believing domestic violence is a norm. He's hit the little one enough to give her a black eye and I kind of hope he just dies in jail. Long story short, the baby that went for adoption has a better life than any of my nieces by far. Her adoptive parents are loving intelligent people and she'll never have to worry about if her dad is going to kill her mom because he lost a video game.

Well that's what CPS is for and if they aren't doing their job that's an entirely separate problem that has nothing to do with this issue. The bottom line is that if one of the parents is a fit parent and wants the child, the other shouldn't be able to give it away without their consent. Adoption is right for a lot of these kids, but the state shouldn't be able to terminate the rights of a fit parent against their will.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I totally understand that and I'm all for it. If one parent is a good parent then so be it. I also think some men should have more rights than they're given, but in some cases neither is. They've been involved with CPS for 6 years and its been a joke to rely on them.

[–]grumpynomad 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Is this just an unrelated anecdote or are you talking about this story?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Unrelated to this particular article, but sharing a story that sometimes neither parent deserves that child and it may end up having a better life even with the father.

[–]grumpynomad 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

While that may be true in some cases, there are plenty enough terrible stories of children being wards of the state and turning to drugs or gangs for acceptance because they felt unwanted by the rest of the world.

Devil you know vs. the devil you don't, and all. We don't know shit about this guy, he could be a deadbeat piece of shit or the most doting, loving father in the world. But now the baby is the state's problem with no input from him, so speculation is now moot.

[–]Swampfocks -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So basically...Even if you have a child, if you're a man you have literally 0 rights to that child.

Ok, let's just start murdering stupid cunts.

The father was part of the process of making the child. With your logic then fathers shouldn't be held responsible for child support.

[–]boostedjoose 18 points19 points20 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

This person is a troll. Check their comment history.

[–]UncharminglyWitty 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Doesn't actually look like they're a troll. Just someone who aggressively enjoys SRS. This seems like the shit SRS people would believe.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

You say that like there is a difference between the two.

[–]UncharminglyWitty 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Sure there is. A troll knows what they're saying is asinine. A SRS power user thinks what they're saying is totally legit.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'm pretty sure they know their ideals are at best ignorant but they get a reaction and they enjoy it, so they'll keep doing it regardless of how little sense it makes even to themselves.

[–]UncharminglyWitty 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Have you been there? They adamantly believe that what they are saying is how the world should be and act.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Some of them do, others openly admit they just like fucking with people for a reaction.

And yes IV been there and got banned for saying something wasnt what they thought it was. Im not defending the little shits, I'm just saying there's not much logic behind what they do as "fighting fire with fire" is an inherently asinine way of seeking change while also meaning they actively troll subs they don't agree with effectively perpetuating the "hate/harassment" they claim to be attempting to free Reddit from creating a endless circle that will not break until they see the error in their ways. But again that's like asking a dog it's name, is it possible it might tell you? Yeah sure, but is it likely? Hell fucking no.

So in cases where the male takes measures to prevent pregnancy, and the female subverts that, he should be absolved of all responsibility?

Or do you advocate replacing female "subservience" with male "subservience"?

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is the line of thought that's kept females back for the better part of millennia and the same reason the modern equal rights movement is a joke.

"Afflicted the woman" are you a 14th century inquisitor or something?

[–]kragshot 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Your use of the term "afflicted" tells me everything I need to know about you being a worthless, waste of the Goddess' blessing of life and fertility. I call down upon you all of the suffering that you, yourself have laid at the feet of others, by the threefold rule.

So mote it be.

[–]bob_barkers_pants 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Wrong. It's a woman's body. Woman's responsibility. The woman should bear the full brunt of caring for and raising the child since she's the one who willingly got a baby planted inside of her, hence should be responsible.

[–]Occamslaser 15 points16 points17 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If the woman wants to give up he rights to the child she is welcome to it. How can she make that choice for the father? Can I absolve myself of child support if I want to put the child up for adoption and the mother doesn't?

[–]rickyimmy 12 points13 points14 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's fine if the Mother doesn't want custody of the child, but why doesn't the Father have the option of taking custody? This seems to be more of a 'pussy privilege' rather than a 'pussy pass' per se, that is, being able to unilaterally cede custody of the child to strangers without any say by the Father.

[–]modernbenoni 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I'm sure you're probably a troll, but: what is the difference between the mother and the feather after the birth? They both created this child and are each equally a parent of the child. If the mother doesn't want the child then that's okay, but that doesn't mean that she should be able to prevent the father from having his child.

You're a piece of shit.

I don't care if you want to get a rise out of me. You still are what you are and knowing there are people out there that genuinely think the way you do makes me angry.

[–]Inlogoraccountan 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

So the best home for the child is with strangers rather than the biological father? The person willing to be the sole parent when the mother gave up her "priority" status as a mother.

[–]chimairacle 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why should her needs as a mother matter at all if she is relinquishing her parenthood? Or does this extend further than parenting, do you think the woman's needs are always the priority in a relationship?

[–]grumpynomad[M] 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fuck outta here SRS

[–]Sworn_to_Ganondorf 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Takes 2 to tango, so it takes 2 to come to a final decision ya fuck.

[–]nevergetssarcasm 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They're not "naturally" the decision of the mother. Up until very recently, women had virtually no rights and were treated as second-class citizens. So where do you get this "naturally" nonsense from?
