I’m prepared for this to be downvoted into oblivion, but I’m seeing enough anger in the comments that I think this post deserves further analysis. For all intents and purposes, let’s call the sex worker on the left “OP,” and the responder on the right “responder.”

What is OP saying? OP’s argument posed is a simple one: she is a sex worker; men assume that because she is a sex worker, she is consenting to any sexual act; that this consent is assumed without confirmation is wrong. The comments in this thread seem to be assuming that all sex workers are participating consensually - that’s absolutely bonkers. I don’t think I’m telling a tale from school here when I say that human sex trafficking is a real thing and that those involved don’t consent to it. This is the point that is wrong - the Johns are wrong not because they are paying for sex, but because they are doing so without regard for OP or whether or not she is a victim of trafficking.

What is responder saying? Responder does not rebut OP’s argument because responder ignores the original point. Instead of engaging in the original point, as to whether consent of a sex worker can be reasonably assumed, they use a whataboutism. Specifically, responder says “what about the John? Did you ask him?” On its face, this argument is a bit silly: by approaching the sex worker and making the purchase, the John consents to the act. We don’t place this same level of scrutiny on people ordering food at a restaurant, or purchasing a doodad from a store; consent can be reasonably assumed on the part of the buyer. This argument does not engage with the original point of OP, of whether or not Johns are confirming that sex workers are sex workers voluntarily.

I know what sub this is; I wholeheartedly expect this comment to tank if it gets any traction at all. But I hope that if you read this far, that maybe you take a better message away - that we can’t just reduce posts like this down to “haha woman bad” - that there can be an actual argument here to pick apart and think about.
