I play video games with my husband and his friend group and the differences between how men and women communicate are really interesting.

There have been a lot of moments where someone said something and I thought, “Oh wow, that was definitely a subtle jab. Do Tom and Josh not like each other? Because that was definitely a backhanded insult. I hope Tom isn’t angry at Josh.”

And then the next day Tom and Josh are talking to each other normally like nothing happened. And I realize that it never was a backhanded insult, and there was never any tension between them. There have been times where I’ve said something and thought “oh Gosh that came out wrong I hope they don’t take that as a subtle insult, I definitely didn’t mean it that way. Will they be hurt by it?” And my husband just laughs and tells me I’m overthinking it. And, sure enough, nothing happens.

But when I was in high school and had a friend group of mostly women, you absolutely 100% did have to worry about backhanded insults and the “subtle meanings” behind certain words or phrases.

It’s absolutely confusing and I’m now having to learn entirely new “rules” of communication.

I recall my early dating life was incredibly impinged by my limited comm skills, but I have good looks so I did ok. However, the comm skills of women far identified as superior, were in fact not. The best thing I ever did in life was quickly dismiss women with whom I shared no personal interest and whom I was not quickly moving towards a romantic or sexual relationship. Dating was much more fun after that.
