Arguments against Feminism

Here’s the thing about feminism. It’s a total buzzword without much of a universal definition. So saying you’re for or against “feminism” is a great way to start an argument because the person you’re talking to may define feminism very differently. When it comes down to specific aspects of “feminism” someone may actually agree with you but they call it feminism and you don’t or vice versa. When someone says they are or aren’t a feminist, it doesn’t really tell you what they mean on any one specific issue. You’ll have a much easier time if you ask about a specific issue. “Do you support abortion?” Or “do you believe women receive equal pay for equal work?” or “do you believe in rape culture?” Questions like that will tell you way more about what an individual actually believes.

Edit: just saw you’re writing a paper. So I think you’ll definitely want to clarify exactly what you mean by feminism in your paper (1st, 2nd, 3rd wave etc, intersectional vs TERF etc.) so you can make a compelling argument. Just my two cents.

So, alternative perspective. A lot of us here actually identify as feminist but participate in this group because feminist spaces don’t tend to support productive conversations around how to have a realistic, functioning male-female relationship.

Your question seems to be biased or at least seems like you're not completely open to changing your mind on certain points. You want to believe that feminism was necessary and that perhaps it's not anymore.

Try to get rid of any preconceived notions and be open to completely change your mind if proof is offered.

I'm not saying things were perfect from the get go. However, could it be that feminism was flawed from day one? Could it be that some things needed fixing yet feminism wasn't the right solution. Perhaps feminism seemed like a good solution because it gave some quick fixes but caused bigger issues along the way. Like a person with a certain disease. They take pills that only treat the symptoms and do not address the actual cause of the disease. He believes he is getting better but in fact this pill is causing side effects that are worse than the symptoms which will show in the long run. Furthermore, the disease has not been treated.

Camille Paglia has some really interesting thoughts about feminism and the differences between men and women. She sometimes is called the antifeminist feminist, because of her criticism of both second wave and third wave feminist movements. I would recommend her book Sexual Persona.

Mary Harrington's book Feminism Against Progress and interviews. From her book's overview: "Feminism" has been captured by well-off white-collar women, who use it to advance their own economic and political interests under the pretense that these are the interests of all women—all the while wielding the term like a club against anyone, male or female, who dissents.

For me personally, I'm the old timey suffragette type of feminist, that believes in equal rights to education, property, voting, access to healthcare and access to public office. Basic normal human rights for all, no matter their gender, religion, political views, age etc. Also because I'm a lefty I'm completely appalled by the objectification and transformation of a human being - or, more specifically, of a woman - into a commodity, particularly through OF and surrogacy.

There’s a book called Anti-Suffragist Essays from the early 1900’s. Very interesting.

From a Christian perspective, but still lots of data that’s not necessarily Christian itself (data is just data), Radical Femininity.

Perhaps from Phyllis Schlafly also wrote some books.
