Maintaining a clean home

I have to remind myself that things get messy because they get used. We use dishes and messy up the kitchen, we just have a regular evening routine to clean it up again. We wear clothes and they get washed.

We use our homes and they get messy. Having a regular clean up time daily manages the mess. Kids play with toys. They pull pillows off to bounce on them. Before dinner you can put on music and a timer and do a quick clean up.

You could get rid of all the toys and you’ll never have a mess (obviously that’s unrealistic). You could not let them play with toys in the living room and not have throw pillows on the couches until they’re older?

When my kids were really bad about changing their clothes a million times - I kept their clothes in my room.

Depending on their age (but I’d say 2+) teach them to pick up their own things they made a mess of. The younger they are the more help they’ll need. But that’s essentially the role of a parent - teaching your kids to do things for themselves. They can pick up their clothes and put them in a hamper or on a hanger. It also teaches them to care for their things and to hopefully not make such a big mess in the future!

Some mess with children is normal, especially when there are babies and toddlers at home. Having help is good and I use a cleaner myself, just to give myself more time to spend with the children.

Children age 4 and above can start to help with the household chores. I started this with my children by having them help me to clean up messes they had made. It takes longer than just cleaning it yourself, but the children do learn and eventually they know not to dump piles of clothes on the floor because it will take an hour of cleaning up to put it away.

I also purchased child friendly cleaning tools. I have a small handheld vacuum that the children use, the paper towels that are at a child reachable height, and we have a couple child size brooms and buckets. My husband and I try to teach the children new things about cleaning and household care regularly. This past weekend he taught the children about caring for gardening tools (how to put the tools away and how to know when a tool needs repair).

Some rooms of the house are off limits for playing. The living room and dining room are not to be used for playing. The children can use these rooms, but they know the dining room is for eating and the living room is for reading a book, not setting up the train set. This also keeps chaos at bay when people come to visit because I'm not trying to talk to my mother-in-law over the noise of a train set or brushing toys off the sofa so she can sit down.

I agree with the rest of the comments, mess is normal. From the sounds of your comment you sound like you’re doing a good job. I would continue to do what you’re doing! A couple tips since you did ask for them, - Before husband comes home I do a QUICK 10 minute pick up. Not sure why but it makes a world of a difference. - Check in with current organization setups and decide if they really are helping or if they could use an adjustment. - watch organizing videos and look at Pinterest for organizing tips.

I use a pretty basic concept, which is not my own but I have no idea where I heard it. If it takes two minutes or less: just do it now. Most of us have at least two minutes to spare in between other tasks. It reduces the blunt force trauma that is staring at a sink that has become Mount Dishes, and other such things that make us want to cry at the end of a long day/week.

Following the FlyLady system of cleaning helped a lot for me. Sticking to dedicated routines, and having a couple periods throughout the day where you do a 5 min. “hot spot” (places gathering messes and toys) clean up, and doing a more comprehensive clean up before bed when kids are sleep is a huge help with kids.
