Moving into our new place has got me thinking about what it takes to run a household, and how we can be the most valuable first mates to our partners.
I'd love to have a discussion about how your household runs, and how you decide who takes on which tasks. Are there any skills that you deliberately learned in order to run a household more effectively?
I know that I've been struggling a bit lately with understanding how to carry my own weight when moving house and settling in, and am starting to understand how important it is to be proactive in discovering and building these skills. I feel like my SO has taken on the majority of the difficult jobs in this move because he's better at them or more suited to it, and it got me wondering why there's so many more things that he's better at. Some skills (lifting heavy things) just come more naturally to him, while others (finances) he's worked hard to cultivate.
At the moment, I'm doing a good job at keeping the house and laundry clean and organised, making sure we have a good meal ready each evening, making the place look welcoming and homely, and of course being sweet and appreciative of all his hard work, but I can't help but feel I could expand and do better. This move has been incredibly draining on my SO, and I want to become more skilled so that I'm able to take some of that stress off his plate, while we're settling in and also into the long term.
He's assured me that moving the furniture, fixing appliances, running the finances, etc is "his domain" and that he's happy to do this for us.
What do you do beyond the usual cooking and cleaning routine to be an active contributor to your household?
I remember coming across a book a while ago, but can't remember the name and google is failing me. It was a kind of good housewife's guide from a long time ago. It went into all of the household work that is considered a woman's domain, with detailed instructions and tips. It covered things like cleaning, mending clothes, cooking, minor repairs, gardening, budgeting and so on. Does this ring a bell? I'd love to get a copy!
