"Petty" because you are punishing him for not wanting children? I don't know if that'd work because even if he say yes to you now, there is no guarantee that he'd go through with it after marriage. I think you should leave him because sounds like you might regret not having children.

You are asking the wrong question. It’s not about “am I petty,” it’s about if you want to be in this relationship. If yes, and you don’t want to get married, then he can accept it or leave. I’m married, we don’t have kids, and it’s important to me because I see it as a religious commitment. I also did not change my last name. There’s lots of different ways to go about things.

Full text: My (F29) and bf (M30) who I currently live with does not want children at all in the future. We are both childless. Is it understandable that I probably don’t want to get married if we are never going to have any? I would rather just keep my own last name. Marriage seems a little pointless without children🧐 if I’m on my death bed and need someone to make decisions I would rather my sister do it.

Why do you think this makes you "petty"? Petty has the following meanings (which I think are all wrong, I understand it to mean being deliberately spiteful over a trivial matter):

Of small importance; trivial: synonym: trivial. Narrow-minded or ungenerous, especially in trifling matters. Of lesser importance or rank; subordinate.

Of these I think you mean #2 but not sure why and this is not a trifling matter. Unless you mean to hurt your partner by this decision?

I happen to agree, there’s really no point in getting married if you don’t plan on having children together. Just live together, keep it simple. But definitely don’t buy a house with someone you are not married to.

Marriage is how you legally join to be family members without children. If that’s not important to you then you don’t need to get married.
