Not everyone wants a red pill style relationship, that's the purpose of dating, to figure these things out.
So sorry about your breakup though, honey :( Better luck next time.
[–]fhigurethisout1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I think there is more to it than that, to be honest (judging by her post history).
But yes, there are men out there who would rather have a woman "control" at least "half" the relationship, due to the way most men are raised in the first place...
[–]fhigurethisout11 points12 points13 points 10 years ago* (24 children) | Copy Link
Looking at your post history, I'm assuming this is the same man you were talking about:
You didn't feel love for this man and you're shocked he left you? A man can tell when you aren't into him, trust me. He isn't a fool.
Your "submissive" attitude probably revealed your lack of emotional investment...
I am sorry for your breakup...but i don't know, this is weird. :/
You also said this:
How can a man be with a woman who doesn't adore him? More importantly, how were you with someone you weren't crazy about? :/ Can you imagine how he'd feel if he read that??
EDIT: yes yes I saw your update too, it was still very weird with this sentence: "I'm all choked up telling him how much I love being with him, and how amazing he is, and how much I love spending time with him and that I'm attracted to him - but that I don't think I love him and I don't know what to do about it and how can I control this."
You told your boyfriend you "don't think you love him"...this may be what nailed the coffin in your relationship...even if you realized too late that you do love him. Maybe at the time you thought you sorted it all out--but what was HE feeling at the time? Combine that with your possibly irritatingly passive attitude (submissive vs passive is very different), you may have the explanation you are looking for...

This information speaks volumes. By saying you were "too submissive" he may have meant that you weren't really pulling your weight and that you seemed disengaged and complacent.
[–]bicepsblastingstud 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
Typically speaking, "too submissive" is code for "annoyingly passive."

We were mutually in a weird place where we were not "in love" - but I was like - hey, why have we been together for two years and adore spending every second together then?
What does it mean to you to be "in love"?

I think that love and compatibility can be mutually exclusive
Love would be choosing to be compatible.
It seems like you have a very idealized, almost mystical, idea in your head of what love should be. I don't honestly understand this idea, although I think it is fairly common. But I don't think it will serve you well in the long run. Instead of love, I would place more value on trust, shared goals, similar values, and reciprocal investment.

It sounds like his reasons for breaking up were more emotional than rational.
Oh, yes compatibility in that sense is important, and what I'd call similar values. Sometimes that word gets used to describe rationalizations for much more trivial disagreements.

No one wants too much of one single thing, if you were too assertive he'd likely give you shit for not respecting his lead.
[–]TheTerrorSquadEndorsed Contributor 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
That's a shit attitude you have. I doubt he'd give her shit whatever she done, he clearly stated (and was adamant) what the problem was. Imo a lot of women here think that if you play the part of a serene ultra feminine innocent then of course he will behave. Her utter shock at this proves this. Moral is to actually listen to him be receptive to the type of man he is and yield to him. Not role play of the RPW.
[–]BowlOfCandy -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Obviously the issue they are hving is more complex than was described, and not so binary as to simply be too much of one thing. Differences between people are hardly noticeable when a relationship is blanketed in naivety and passion, yet they eccentuate and snowball in nonrational manners as it fades and certain tensions rise.
My comment was merely a neutral statement on human nature, not a "shit attitude". If you actually read it you would notice that it was actually indirect advice to employ greater balance between submissive and assertive behavior, which is exactly part of the problem presented. BTW your comment has a shit tone fellow RP pleb.

[–]TheTerrorSquadEndorsed Contributor 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
It sounds like you was doing (whatever you was doing) more for yourself and what you wanted ( a rp relationship) instead of being what he wanted/needed
[–]TheTerrorSquadEndorsed Contributor 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
There is a difference between dominating and being assertive. My husband would be repulsed if I tried to dominate him but he likes the fact I'm enthusiastic and pro active in most of my life. It's not as simple as just submissive or dominant.
[–]Dailyreal[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I don't disagree, I am generally very enthusiastic, if anything, too much so haha. Also proactive in planning things for us, and in my own life as well. Honestly, I was most indecisive about dinner because he is suuuuper particular about food and i am more open to eating anything. In that context, it made more sense to me that the pickier person can pick. Rather than me repeatedly making a suggestion, and getting a "no...no...mm that doesnt sound good...no...." I mean if he thought I was too submissive, he is certainly allowed. I just was not aware he felt that way until he had already made up his mind... Which, again, sucks, but that happens sometimes.

From reading your history, it seems like you weren't all that into this relationship either.
You described a month ago about not being in love or knowing what love really is like. I think you wanted to make this relationship work even though you weren't feeling it.
It's like you were in love with the idea of a relationship but not in love with him. You can't mask that emptiness with submissive behavior and hope he doesn't notice your lack of love.
It hurts to be rejected. I imagine you're feeling that sting right now. Cry for a bit, then brush yourself off and move on. This relationship just wasn't meant to be. (If you doubt that, then re-read your old comments.)
Best wishes. Keep your head up. :-)

LOL! It's the same, exact rule as on TRP.
Gender announcements are not necessary on either sub.

[–]TempestTcup 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
It's not a stupid rule, people announce their gender in hopes that their comment carries more weight than if they just made the comment. If your comment can't handle being genderless, then it wasn't that great of a comment anyway.
P.S. You sound super butt-hurt :)
[–]TempestTcup 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Just stating the facts, LOL!
[–]PremiumGoose 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Oh man. Are you me OP? I had the exact same thing before. He was older, after a while said I was young and it wasn't going to work out, not quite what he wanted and didn't want to waste any time, etc.
Sorry to hear it it wasn't anyone's fault. I feel it was inappropriate on his part to not bring it up before hand and wait until it was too much. From here it looks like he didn't see you as enthused and/or contributing like he feels a partner should.
[–]Dailyreal[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Thanks, it happens eh? Relationships get that way sometimes!
[–]PremiumGoose 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Totally. I read some of your other comments on this post and if you were just being you, then it wasn't going to work for him but you'll be just fine. Best of luck OP :)
[–]TalkToHusband 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Only you know the details of your relationship but something about this seems fishy to me. At his age, the reason why people leave long term relationships are far more serious and pressing than "too submissive". At the very least he would have brought it to your attention earlier.
I think he is hiding something.

Trollish
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
We sat down and he said that I was too submissive, and he wanted an equal partner and that this was something on his mind for a while.
The most normal translation for this would be that you're boring and uninteresting, a "yes-woman." This contradicts your description, though:
I did absolutely make a number of decisions in our relationship, and introduced him to new fun things that he loved a lot. He is a total homebody, which is perfectly fine, and I would invite him out to really fun activities that he loved every couple of weekends. I made a lot of our dinner plans, etc.
Alternative explanations - this coincides conveniently with end of the honeymoon period, he may not know how to handle the loss of electric new-romance butterflies. Or he may idealize the Manic Pixie Dream Girl personality, which is beta crack. Or, as other commenters have pointed out, you've given indications of not being that into him which he may have picked up on.
In any case, he broke up with you, there's currently nothing to do but to move on graciously. Good luck, OP.
Manic pixie dream girl.....when I was in the dating pool and a guy said the love Zooey Deschanel but can't explain why it was a red flag. I'm very happy to find out I'm not the only one with this sentiment.

Hello there, account that showed up one month ago to prove that you exist but sucked at posting so got your post removed, then waited silently since you weren't committed to the trolling bit, and then popped up out of nowhere to give a feminist shpiel. My name is CisWhiteMaelstrom, how do you do?

I do poorly under the current circumstances, but am reminded to take with a grain of salt what internet strangers have to say and chortle at how far off base you are! :)
