I apologize if this comes across as rambling, I tried to keep this as succinct as possible but this just happened a few hours ago and I’m still reeling a bit.

Long story short, I met a man about three months ago, and about two months ago we became exclusive. We’re both in college and are apart for the summer (me in SC, him in NY). I wanted to come visit him/him come visit me but I didn’t want to pay hundreds of dollars for a plane ticket without the official “girlfriend” label. So, the last night before he left for home I asked “what he was thinking” about us going forward. I know RPW says the girl shouldn’t do this, but it seemed like a home run to me since we were already exclusive, I’d met his friends, etc. His friends even called me his girlfriend! To my surprise, he said he wasn’t sure he was ready for a relationship. Though shocked, I think I hid my disappointment well. I didn’t want to pressure him or make it feel like an ultimatum so I told him I’d give him some time to think about it.

Fast forward 3 weeks, to today. We have snap chatted/texted every day and have talked on the phone several times during our time apart. Yesterday, another man asked me out. I didn’t know what to say because my man had never finished “thinking” about what we were. So I called my man and told him the truth, that another man asked me out and I didn’t know what to say because I didn’t know what we were. To my dismay, he said he didn’t care if I went out with this other guy. He made it clear he did not want to be in a relationship. Then, he tried to go on talking like it was any other phone call!! I apologized and told him that if he for sure did not want to commit to me that I would be seeing other people, and that I would no longer be talking to him on the phone, snap chatting, and texting him. He seemed a little sad but said okay.

My question is, did I act too rashly? At first I felt proud of myself for walking away when it became clear he would not commit. But then I saw some posts/comments on here by women who waited six months or more to get the “girlfriend” title and I got worried I acted too soon. Thanks for your thoughts and advice.
