I actually really love the Baroness and she isn't evil villain at all. She is a good model for femininity. So is Maria, in a different way.

Regardless, Maria is better for the Captain because she is willing to take care of his seven children and be a present and doting step mother to them. The Baroness obviously was not as enthusiastic about having a whole lot of misbehaved children who aren't "hers" around her all the time and was arranging for them to attend prestigious boarding schools.

Both Maria and the Baroness wanted different things, and the Baroness eventually gracefully bows out and moves on when she realizes the connection between Maria and Captain.

Ultimately I think it is better to be the Baroness because she probably went on to end up with a man with no kids/as much baggage and truly loved her.

It is optimal for a woman to be a combination of traits from both of these characters.

Don’t know what you watched but the baroness isn’t evil. Think the villain was the nazis lol she was set as as what was good on paper option

I find this very interesting, the differences between the two women.

I wonder if he would have picked Maria if he did not have so many children. I doubt the Baroness would sacrifice her life to take care of them. She was probably off having children of her own with somebody else tbh.

Anyway it does beg the question if men with the choice would pick an affluent, elegant, sophisticated woman, or a more innocent and down-to-earth type of woman, there are examples of both out in the real world. I often think of women who combine both: Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's, Marilyn Monroe in some like it hot, etc. Maybe that's why they were such big hits.

What a sweet question!

The age gap between Maria and the Captain always bothered me. But her way with the kids is the clincher here. Also, she didn’t fall into a too-submissive role (queue the dog whistle scene) which makes the age gap surmountable.

The Baroness was just a lovely lady at the wrong spot, which she realised - and made her no-drama exit accordingly. She might not have been right for the Captain (given his baggage) but she was definitely right for someone else.

Full text: I re-watched The Sound of Music last night, which I had not seen in a long time. Watching it as an adult hits different and it made me wonder… which woman in the film was the better choice for the Captain? Although the Baroness is obviously the evil villain in this movie, she does admittedly have some good qualities: she takes care of her appearance, seems to be a good hostess, etc.

Meanwhile, Maria, clearly cares about the children and has that kind of innocent essence that seems to draw the Captain in. Later in the film, she also seems to be a good first mate by following his lead in working to escape the Nazis.

Thoughts?
