Men want to feel and be needed. That they have value for their selves, including their biological selves. Men fuck, that's how we contribute value. Men also possess strength, take risks, derive out our individuality through challenge and overcoming challenge, etc (all of these are variations on fucking to a degree). So we are not looking for even more of that. We look for complementary qualities. IE, someone to fuck.

What you're talking about, having survival skills to thrive, that's what we look for in terms of interdependence. We don't want a woman who is dependent on us. We want someone who works with what we have to offer and brings something to the table. Don't conflate having one's own life, personality, etc as the same thing as relational independence. Add value, especially in the ways that don't come as easily to a man. If you bring and submit your independence to work with his, this is far better than being clingy and dependent. Submission then through clingyness is kind of a turn off.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

You misunderstand, men don't like unyielding women who take overweening pride in independence to the point that they can't even mildly submit. That you are independent and self sufficient when single is fine, don't become so set in your ways that living with another person and not trying to control and micromanage them becomes impossible

how are you going about this?

[–]FleetingWishEndorsed Contributor 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I need my job, I need my apartment, I need my food, water, and shelter. I need to be able to pay for these things myself and I want to work to make more money.

Um... I have a job, my own apartment, food, water and shelter, and my SO likes me just fine. But, even though you have those things, at the same time you're clearly not independent. Financially, you may be independent, but you've admitted to yourself you want a man in your life, and want to take the steps necessary to get one, that's what's important.

The "independent" woman is a woman who doesn't need a man for anything, not for happiness, not for security, not for anything. She's perfectly fine on her own. Then she starts asking why the men are so intimidated by her own independence, and doesn't realize they've just taken the hint that she doesn't need them. If a woman doesn't need a man, why would a man be around when she decides she "wants" one? Men want more value placed on their lives than that, they want to be needed.

Yes, you do need all of those things and those are totally realistic, but as others have said it kind of went over your head with as to how it really is.

Why isn't there anyone who likes you? Appearance, personality, etc? What? It isn't just magical. You don't want to wait five years then make changes so that you don't have too.

Also, you never know what type of man may want you in his life. You say "no good boyfriend is just going to suddenly financially support a women he has barely been dating" when that is far from the actual truth. My SO started financially supporting me within 5-6 months of knowing each other. I moved in and here we are years later. If you have serious potential AND value that can add to HIS life then a man will be able to see this. Granted, not all men are financially capable of such things, but it does exist.

Providing for yourself, cooking your food, and making a home are all womanly skills that we've probably been practicing since the paleolithic. See it as practice for your future husband and family: would a feminine woman allow her children to go hungry if her husband lost his job? No way- she would get out there and work, and then cook dinner and clean house. That's what my grandmother did in the 40s and 50s, but she is the most feminine and admirable woman I know.

I personally believe a guy can be a stay at home dad and do housework and still be an alpha

how would he demonstrate any alpha qualities in this scenario--explain in detail

you may have seen this in action, it may even exist somewhere-but if you are BANKING on it for get about it, your chances of finding the magic unicorn man who is: attractive to you, attracted TO you, ANd is willing to stay home and be a house husband are as follows

  1. slim
  2. fat and
  3. none

bank on finding a regular man, because thats what your going to get, if you get one

no i agree--but what you just described is a far cry from "house husband".

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 12 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

ok, how to explain this

any possible combinaton of things can technically work. can there exist a househusband who remains attractive and dominant in his relationship, retains his wifes respect and devotion and her sexual hunger? YES, ANYTHING is possible on an individual level.

OP is single, shes making a life plan. we find an inordinate number of young women are BANKING on FINDING unicorn outlier men who will have a list of really not very common traits in ATTRACTIVE MEN WHO HAVE OPTIONS. women seem singularly incapable of understanding probability. lets say the househusband unicorn who stays attractive to his woman AND is ALSO attractive to her AND commits to her exist--how are you going to find him? he's probably on the othe rside of the country.

we go by probabilities and the law of large numbers. calibrate your sight son how the MOST common attractive man ACTUALLY is, not on your made up unicorn man youll never meet

i hope this made sense

The OP was confused and misunderstood. If you read the responses, everyone has been correcting her.

this sub is not satire, and to imply that it might be is insulting - so please discontinue that behavior immediately.

Edit: Your comment has been removed because it adds nothing to the conversation and it's insulting. This is your first (and last) warning.

male here. I hope that doesn't break any rules

A couple of points: there's a fine line between being a damsel in distress and a burden. Being dependent isn't a golden ticket (I don't know who implied it was).

The trick is to make your mark feel like he's needed or wanted. There are things that you can obviously do yourself - you seem like a smart woman - but letting a guy be your hero, even if its something really minor, will have him. Reward him in a quote/unquote "submissive" way and boom, he'll be thinking about you for weeks.

for example. "Hey Jim, you're really tall/smart/strong, can you help me change this lightbulb/repair this/move that/fetch those." Jim wants to be your knight in shining armour so he does it. The incidental complement, smile etc won him over. "Oh thanks Jim, you're the best. Here, I made you some cupcakes/coffee/a martini!" Job done.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Being independent is perfectly fine. What men are typically unattracted to is a woman who is obsessed with her job and being independent to where she doesn't want anybody else "messing up her plans" or would balk at the idea of letting someone else take the reins. You can be financially independent and still be able to attract and keep a man. Just don't let it consume you.

What's important is that you don't lose touch with your femininity in the process. Keep the job and the apartment, but don't make it the sole focus of your life. Have other hobbies. When you get an SO, make him your main priority, not your job. He'll appreciate that.

[–]Toss24 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Doesn't that have more to do with her personality and attitude than the fact she has a job / career? Also, can't the same thing be said for men? Can't they also be too job obsessed and neglect their family? Or is a man who takes time for family something not encouraged here?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's the obsessiveness that's the problem. As I said, a girl can have a job and still attract a man.

Workaholic attitudes can be an issue for both sexes, but more so for the mother since she would typically be the caretaker. Men are encouraged to take time for family because a man's influence on his children is important, but they are also the primary provider, so they often need to set aside extra time for work if necessary.

I personally write as far as my main hobby goes. A lot of people like to take on productive hobbies like writing, knitting/sewing, cooking (yes, it can be a hobby), and exercise-based hobbies. I enjoy walking as a hobby as well when I can get in the time to bring a friend on walks beyond campus.

It really depends on what you enjoy doing the most. You can make a hobby out of most things (from collections to activities).
