My boyfriend and I have been officially together for about 6 months now. I love him a lot and he treats me really well. He is supportive, a great communicator, protective, considerate, etc. Whenever we are together I never have to worry about contributing financially. I am very appreciative when he takes me on dates or goes out of his way for me. A couple of months ago, we were talking on the phone and flowers came up. He has not got me flowers yet. I want to make it clear I never expected him to since he wasn't aware that I like them, but I do think it is a nice gesture. I mentioned it'd be really nice to receive surprise flowers from him as it would make me feel happy, special, loved, etc. His initial reaction threw me off. He was so quick to respond with "And I'd like a billion dollars" which really hurt in the moment. As if I am asking for too much or being unrealistic. I told him that and he apologized. He also expressed that he rather get them for me on special occasions and not on a random day or "just because" though I told him that I prefer to receive them as an actual surprise vs. special occasions (birthday, anniversary, etc) where it would be expected and not a surpise.
Well, last night we were on the phone and I asked him if he does not want to get me flowers since it has not happened yet and how it makes me feel like he does not think I am worthy enough of a bouquet of flowers. He said he rather get them for a special occasion again, when he feels like they are deserved and he rather him buy them because he wants to and not because I'm asking for them basically. The "deserved" comment threw me off and I told him that. He said he did not mean it as in I do not deserve it but for when he feels the time is right.... It left a bad taste in my mouth because I don't think I am asking for a lot and his resistance makes me feel like he doesn't care to do a small thing to make me happy. If the roles were flipped and he requested something of me I would do my best to fulfill it.
I know this is not the hill to die on, especially since he is very patient, kind and caring to me overall. I still can't help to feel sad that a small request of mine is brushed off. I hope this is not coming across as bratty or entitled but it's the principal for me. I guess I'm looking for either a reality check or is this something I should note in the back of my mind? Either way, I do not want to hold this against him silently but I am finding it difficult to drop it.
