I'm interested to hear your thoughts on the idea of the second shift, which alleges that even when a man and woman work the same amount of hours, the household management falls exclusively onto the women, largely because she has to remind the man to do his part.
Even if a guy does half the laundry, cleaning, dishes etc, the woman is usually the one who has to remind him to do these things. She also keeps track of schedules, deadlines, and random household tasks like if you're running out of dish soap. Hence, the woman carries a much greater mental load.
Here is an oft-cited comic about this https://english.emmaclit.com/2017/05/20/you-shouldve-asked/
I am currently not working, so I have been running the household, and my boyfriend will put the laundry on or do some dishes from time to time. This feels alright seeing as I have spare time, but in February I'm going back to University full time and I'm nervous about what will happen then.
I genuinely love homemaking and I'd never thought of it in a negative light until this, but I'm having trouble reconciling the fact that if I don't remind my boyfriend to do things (like take garbage out), he actually will not do them for 2 weeks. It feels like a large mental burden to keep track of everything.
