Alternative approach (for those going for LTR game, at least):

Give her a crappy ring with the proposal, and once she accepts have one of your parents, or other family members, give her a better ring as a "conditional gift".

I went this way. The ring I bought her was a measly $500. It was all I could afford at the time. Later, my father gave her a family heirloom ring work $4.5K, as a conditional gift, wherein the condition is that she remains my wife.

If she divorces me, the gift is returned to my mother (my father passed a couple years ago). If my mother passes before then, it just comes back to me.

It was also made entirely clear to my wife that it was conditional, and what the conditions were, so from a legal standpoint, she entered into a verbal contract for temporary and conditional custody of the item.

Or something impressive sounding like that...

Wow that article is pretty surprising. I don't know about requiring witnesses, but holy hell should you know your woman better before you propose. You sure are hell literally propose though, yikes.

Yeah, don't give any ring of value (that is, significantly expensive as compared to your disposable WEALTH not income) to a woman, either for engagement or marriage. Period.

If she's really LTR material, she'll understand that spending money on frivolous bullshit is a waste of resources that could be better used INSIDE THE MARRIAGE, like for appliances, starting a college fund for the future kids, starting a joint savings account, etc.

Ditto with the wedding itself. At the church, reception at a family member's home or a park or somewhere cheap (if you have one at all), or a ceremony at the JP's office. Again, if she's really LTR material, it's the relationship that will count, and not the "fairy tale" experience and the Facebook photos to share and get likes on.

I know you should never get married. But if you propose, video tape it. Additionally, add a clause about the right to your mandatory prenup.
