I think this may be a case of male solipsism. That is, you are incapable of seeing how girls can be attracted to "unconventionally" attractive men because there isn't really an equivalent reference from your POV.

The guy isn't a classically good looking guy like Pitt, Cruise or Tatum. He is more in what some girls call the "sexy ugly" category. This almost always is a combination of an "interesting" face with lots of status and mystique to go with it.

It's the same thing average to below average guys have to do to get girls hooked. The whole "there's something about him" thing.

All that said, this guy has plenty of conventionally attractive features going on. Sure the whole thing is kind of "odd" but that can often draw a girls eye just as much. As soon as other girls make it safe to admit they find him "sexy" it's open season.

TLDR - just because you don't find him attractive doesn't mean women don't.

I'm bi, I can tell when a man is physically attractive.

Maybe I should have put that in my OP.

[–]Holden_Frame0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't think it's a matter of being bi or not. It's about being male or female.

In fact, if you look at gay guys (and their porn), their ideas of attraction are almost always generic and predictable compared to women. They are, after all, men and subject to the same rigid ideas of what is "fuckable".

Closest male to female equivalent I can think of is somebody like Bjork. She is (or was) considered hot by a lot of guys even though she had a distinctly odd look.

Yep, this is kind of my point - why I made the post. My observation is that Cumberbatch is not a sexy looking guy, but females particularly are obsessed with the guy - there is even a large female specific sub dedicated to him, r/cumberbitches.

As for Bjork, she is attractive - especially after copious makeup and hair, something she indulged in - but she acted odd. She didn't actually look that strange facially.

We've already figured out what women find attractive in men - piercing eyes, chiseled facial features, broad shoulders and narrow waist. Cumberbatch has all of these. They're signifiers of high testosterone. And that's what women are attracted to.

To some extent, but fame, status and wealth have a huge hand to play.

I saw a similar obsession happen in the 90s with Kevin Spacey. For a time he was everywhere, and women were gushing.

Then his star was eclipsed, and they all seemed to forget.

Similarly, certain musicians follow a similar fame arc. I, for one, didn't think any of the Beatles were particularly attractive, yet girls were screaming over them, and throwing themselves into their beds.

Women, as a group, get uniquely fixated on certain famous males for a time, becoming absolutely hysterical, then it all dies down and a new focus comes into view.

[–]anonlymouse-1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

They make him more popular, but they don't make him more attractive. Someone posted Vladimir Putin to /r/LadyBoners and even though downvotes are technically prohibited by the sub's rules, that post was sitting at 0.

Money and fame won't get women saying someone is gorgeous, although they will still be attracted to it.

I saw a similar obsession happen in the 90s with Kevin Spacey. For a time he was everywhere, and women were gushing.

He's older, he's less attractive than he once was. What you'll again see on /r/LadyBoners is posts of men when they're in their prime. Young Harrison Ford, young Clint Eastwood, young Marlon Brando - you never see anyone saying Marlon Brando from The Godfather or Apocalypse Now is good looking.

That sub is full of pictures of famous succesful men.

[–]anonlymouse0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

But not all of them. No pictures of Hugh Hefner for instance, even though he obviously gets pussy. The absence of pictures of certain famous successful men disproves your hypothesis.

Your mentioning of rich, famous men who are still able to score beautiful women actually proves my hypothesis.

[–]anonlymouse0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, it doesn't. If the only reason women liked Benedict Cumberbatch was because he's rich and famous you'd see the same women swooning over Hugh Hefner. Hefner has a much smaller fan base. Cumberbatch is popular because he's physically attractive to women.

He is tall and has a deep as fuck voice. That and money and we got ourselves a playboy

[–]soccerplusaviation2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Dude. Think about the type of character he plays on screen. In Sherlock Holmes and in Star Trek, he plays the confident, cocky, a bit arrogant, highly skilled, intelligent, observant, courageous, focused, influential character. Yeah he looks odd, but he does have a deep voice and a strong jawline. And we all know women love all the above traits.

And when you think about it, women always fall for those types of characters. Think Johnny depp, dicaprio, Pitt, that dude from suits with the basketball, vin diesel. Man, I don't even know why you made this post, the answer is as clear as glass.

[–]ShitLordXurious[S] -2 points-1 points0 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

A square jawline is a sign of high testosterone, not a pointy narrow one like Cumberbatch.

[–]soccerplusaviation3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

K well we can argue that, but your missing the point. The point is, in the roles he plays, he undeniably displays masculine traits and is enigmatic. And in the eyes of women, masculine traits coupled with mystery is important more than looks.

[–]jolly--roger0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's a sign of genes, get real.

[–]riverraider692 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Did you see him in star trek? I'm straight as a reasonably straight arrow, and he gave me tingles. Guy has presence.

[–]ShitLordXurious[S] -2 points-1 points0 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'm bi, and he gives me no tingles.

That's part of what inspired this post. I don't get the current obsession.

[–]riverraider691 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

De gustibus, I guess. It's enough if a (relatively small) part of the female population finds him very attractive to create enough buzz. Add a bit of preselection...

[–]-Tyler_Durden-3 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Women want what other women want. This is why pre-selection and social proof are important concepts to learn.

Not going on a tirade about the looks or lack thereof of another dude but, everytime I see him peddling a film, I'm immediately reminded of Bill Nye for some reason.

That aside, you hit the nail on the head, Money + Fame = giny tingles. He could look like Flava Flav and there would still be hamsters spinning about looks not mattering as long as there's a pay out.

[–]ShitLordXurious[S] -4 points-3 points-2 points 11 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, he's a strange looking man.

I think it's an interesting reflection of female perceptions of attractiveness, which are no more or less "shallow" than male ones, merely driven by different sexual agendas.

hamsters spinning about looks not mattering as long as there's a pay out.

What I find particularly fascinating though, is how women are convincing themselves that he is good looking - there are Tumblr pages devoted to pictures of the guy. Their giny tingles, created by his fame, wealth, and status, are actually warping their visual perceptions.

[–]NazoXIII1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

It's pretty simple, Women don't know what they want or like, their main impulse is tingles and feels. They like him for some reason, they don't know why on a more than subconscious level so they default to him being good looking.

I've heard girls musing over less than average looking men with money, doesn't surprise me one bit. Kim Dot Com was banging models at one point and he's the male equivalent of a land whale, but his bank account probably makes him look like some kind of God to hypergamy driven Hoes.

[–]ShitLordXurious[S] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, it is pretty simple, once you see it.

There seem to be so many people criticising me for saying this though, I don't understand. I was starting to wonder if we'd been raided by TwoX or something!
