Dawkins is ALWAYS misquoted. I've never heard him say anything that wasn't logical, reasonable and as polite as necessary. The problems come because he doesn't sugar-coat or compromise, and he's willing to criticise people's most dearly held beliefs when he seems a logical or factual inconsistency.

The media loves cherry-picking tidbits to stir up controversy and to get readers to click on stories.

At times like these is when you can see the clear separation between people who are level-headed, use common sense, and apply context versus people who take things out of context and rage over essentially nothing. Categorization of rape exists because modern feminism has branded sleeping with an acquaintance and later regretting it as "rape".

The thing is that Dawkins has been the victim of pedophilia. IIRC he was inapropriately touched by a priest or something. So it's rather hilarious to see SJW accusing him of not empathising with rape victims, as if he had no idea what it felt like.

While I admire the effort what he is doing is completely useless. The response he got didn't have anything to do with logic.

The response he got was women recognizing the word rape and throwing out a cry for attention. There is no argument here to be won, there is no logic to be used. Either you ignore it or you address their emotions instead of the argument (a better blog response would be "lol look at all these angry fat uggo feminists, I wish chumps would sack up and hump these wales so they wouldn't be crying on twitter all the time").

That said I recognize that his blog isn't targeted to the feminists but readers that do appreciate the logic and the "look at all these dumb people, we are clearly intellectually superior to these people" feeling.

Yeah I saw this and was like "okay, here it comes in 3, 2, 1...." and they don't disappoint.

I mean, IDK about the context here, but if his point is that you're better off having someone you know and/or trust drug you and violate you vs. having a stranger pull a knife to do the exact same thing I'm not sure I totally agree. But it's the same old story of "how dare he" even have an opinion on the subject. If they disagree with him they should be able to rationally explain why his perspective is flawed.

No, I think it's that he is slightly defensive over these issues because of previous public statements he made.

With regard to the pedophilia issue, he came in for criticism over this part of his recently published autobiography:

"I would watch games of squash from the gallery, waiting for the game to end so I could slip down and practise by myself. One day – I must have been about eleven – there was a master in the gallery with me. He pulled me onto his knee and put his hand inside my shorts. He did no more than have a little feel, but it was extremely disagreeable (the cremasteric reflex is not painful, but in a skin-crawling, creepy way it is almost worse than painful) as well as embarrassing."

With regard to the rape issue, he has courted controversy with the following comment:

"Stop whining, will you. Yes, yes, I know you had your genitals mutilated with a razor blade, and … yawn … don’t tell me yet again, I know you aren’t allowed to drive a car, and you can’t leave the house without a male relative, and your husband is allowed to beat you, and you’ll be stoned to death if you commit adultery. But stop whining, will you. Think of the suffering your poor American sisters have to put up with.

Only this week I heard of one, she calls herself Skep”chick”, and do you know what happened to her? A man in a hotel elevator invited her back to his room for coffee. I am not exaggerating. He really did. He invited her back to his room for coffee. Of course she said no, and of course he didn’t lay a finger on her, but even so…"

So Richard Dawkins was molested as an 11 year old. Seems it didn't cripple him as a human being (no victim complex), in fact he's become an extremely well known evolutionary biologist and author. I'm honestly surprised (i guess i shouldn't be..) that people don't look to him as an example of getting past the past.

As far as Joncho's comment, /u/nrjk has it correct, he is tackling dogma with skepticism and humor

He's a public figure. If you don't like attention, you don't become a public figure. Also unlike your average gender studies "academic", he has a disinguished scientific career, and has written best seller popular science books.

I wasn't disagreeing on that point, but merely stating he's shifted focus. And really, pretty much everyone likes and enjoys attention. The ones that don't usually resent the ones that can command that attention.
