you've gotta hand it to Scott Adams, because he's been openly writing against the politically correct grain for as long as I can remember. i've seen him come under fire for "sexist" (aka rational) pieces like these several times, and he has certainly lost a lot of business over it. go buy a Dilbert anthology.

He was actually a victim of AA practices when he was in the corporate world, so he has a lot of frustration there.

He was passed up for promotions twice due to ''diversity'' reason. Each case a woman was picked, and he was told it was explicitly for more diversity in the executive ranks.

Let's be real here, if Scott Adams had been politically adept and versed in manipulating the levers of power, he would never have been passed over in those contexts. Affirmative action or no, he got out-foxed in the corporate world.

Good for him that he's managed to make money on his inability to politick by lampooning the sociopaths and the clueless in a comic strip written in straight-talk, aimed at fellow losers like himself, but if he were skilled at playing the game rather than simply smart enough to see how it's played while lacking the grace to play it, he wouldn't have resorted to cartooning.

That's like making a guy run a marathon where everyone else gets an hour head start, and then telling the guy he just should have been faster.

Good points. I would agree with you there.

As someone who used to be in the corporate world, power and its use is very underrated. He probably thought he could get ahead just by "working hard"

Why the fuck are you being downvoted. You're talking a lot of sense and obviously causing some butthurt.

This is actually true. "Affirmative Action" doesn't mean they randomly pick a person of color or a woman to fill a role. Generally, it refers to a "tiebreaker" - when two candidates are equally balanced, AA/diversity means the non-white, non-male will be chosen. Yeah it's unfair, but it's not like what people make it out to be.

Ha ha. You still buying that line?

If you choose to play a game where the deck is stacked against you, then you most likely will lose. You're correct in that the game of approaching the decision-makers as a faceless candidate, one among many, subjects you to rules that may well be stacked against you. You're choosing to fight a losing battle.

If instead you choose to make the correct friends, do favors for the correct people, lay a foundation of support from within the system you hope to penetrate, then you'll find that your odds have increased dramatically. This is of course somewhat more difficult to do in the context of applying to college than to do in the workplace, or applying to a job in your city or town. Hence, the example isn't entirely analogous.

Appearing to support AA brings the company one kind of benefit, but not at the cost of alienating an internal player with proven worth as an ally or a pawn. Blind application to any job is a losing strategy. You might win out, but it is unlikely to have been entirely on your own merits. There's always a side you don't get to see firsthand.

Whatever, I'm asian, and the white applicant with the 1430 SAT score will get in over the Asian with a 1650 SAT.

[–]HiddenPools2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You don't know what AA is until you deal with the government. Good luck getting in without being a vet.

[–]1AreYouAware_-2 points-1 points0 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly, and if you're close enough with the decision-makers, and you can convince them by hook or by crook that you're the unquestionable choice, then you're in. Any competition from the outside is merely ceremony.

Assuming that his writing persona is an accurate representation of how he communicated as a corporate drone, then he's got a terminal case of foot-in-mouth disease that will put a hard celling on his advancement in that world. Straight talk is not the lingua franca of power.

Ah, I love this guy. Shit, I hope I didn't just harass him...

[–]BabarJohn[🍰] 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This is not what i would call debuking statistics. The guy is basically taking numbers out of his hat, and telling an anecdotal-evidence based story, to make these new numbers he just made up a bit less worrying than the original ones.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agreed, shitpost. How is he able to claim rational and then proceed to completely guess at figures. Couldn't look up how many Hooters-type places there were compared to the rest?

While this is a rather good post, you should honor the posting rules on this sub and add your own opinion to the link.

Dilbert and Dogbert are prophets of our time.

"For starters, let's remove from the stats the folks who take jobs at Hooters and other restaurants that position the staff's appearance as part of the "entertainment." I would argue that those employees are signing up to be sexually objectified in return for the promise of easy work and good tips."

Shitlord detected, rape culture, blah blah blah.

Someone please repost this to 2XC.

They don't take kindly to people who openly work as sex workers, strippers, hooters girls, etc.

Unless of course you hate it, or you're reformed, etc.
