Background: My friend Amy hit the wall very early, right after finishing college, when she gained weight. I used to fancy her when I was 16, but got rejected (I was too shy and still BP). Then the situation flipped and she entered the friend-zone for a decade. She became sad every time I got together with someone else.
My self-improvement mission in the last 10 years has been very successful and girls like the new me. Amy admits that she doesn't know me anymore, even though we have known each other since kindergarten.
Story: 5 guys including me and Amy went on a road trip. I have been on sick leave the last three months before the trip and I wasn't sure if I'll able to go at first. I was the one who was supposed to plan everything and be the leader (my usual role). Luckily the last weeks before the holiday I started feeling a bit better, but still felt sick most of the time.
Amy started being her bitchy self from the first day. My friend Stuart tried to put her back to her place, but quite often lost the frame and started being more emotional than herself.
I handled it much better, but my sickness and constant headache held me back from reacting in a better way, so she kept shit-testing me from time to time.
One evening I mentioned that single motherhood correlates with poverty, teenage pregnancy, criminality etc. She was raised byt a single mother, so she completely lost it and started (verbally) attacking me. Next morning I acted like nothing happened and even offered her some tea I was making.
Another time we were walking on the beach and since I am a fast walker, I often had to wait for the group. She was shit-testing me with "Why don't you slow down to our pace?". My response: "Why don't you speed up a little?" She started talking about how I improved so many things about myself in the last 10 years but still haven't been able to walk slower. I didn't react, sped up and just walked away from the group.
We went for a hike in the mountains, but slowly rain has built up. I saw the clouds getting lower (a sign for more rain), so I told the whole group of 6 people: "Let's go back, this is not worth it, we have 3 more days of hiking. The rain will only get worse." Amy wanted to one up me, so she turned her hamster on full speed: "I'm sure the weather will clear once we get higher. The clouds getting lower is actually a good sign, there will be no rain up there." No shit. She doesn't know anything about the weather in the mountains. As the group leader, I just ignored it, turned back and the 4 other guys followed. Amy had no other choice. 20 minutes later we were back in the hut and the rain was only getting worse. It kept raining for another 5 hours.
Amy had to constantly disagree with me and towards the end of the holiday I mostly ignored her. She sensed that something was wrong and when we got back, she told me that the two of us need to grab a drink. My sick body got exhausted on the holiday, so I spent the next 10 days mostly in bed with headache sleeping, still feeling sick. I didn't have energy for her drama, but she kept asking over e-mail. I told her I didn't want to meet her in person and that she should behave better and be more respectful.
At this point I didn't care. Amy is almost like a sister, I have known her forever, but I was ready to drop the friendship. Besides, I was still sick and had more important problems, like my career beeing on hold for being so sick.
And then she did it. She fucking apologized. For the first time in 20 years. I saw her later at a party and she was much nicer to everyone. She dropped her typical bitch attitude.
It's getting old here, but I need to repeat it: Hold your frame. It changes women.
