"necessary"? of course not.
"highly beneficial?" fuck yeah.

I can confirm.
I was a natural with psychology, and it carried me, but getting to the verbal stage was a pain in the ass.
Now that I've got abs, they come to me. I'm still getting used to it. I dropped in to a Walgreens yesterday and caught every woman staring at least once. Never happened to me ever as far as I'm aware before abs. It's becoming much more common, and I'm not young.
To OP: Not being small is necessary. Having abs and above average bulk makes the hardest part, the beginning, cake.

Hahaha he probably lives in a beach city and was shirtless
[–]BurgundyCarpet 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yup. Your psychological game is no longer necessary because now your abs are all the game you need.
However, your psychological game is now the ICING ON THE CAKE, and no longer the cake itself. Now your abs are the cake.
And bitches love cake.

Strength is the ability to exert one's will over oneself, over nature, and over other people. It is strength that makes all other values possible. - Jack Donovan The Way of Men
Strength in its purest sense is physical - being bigger, more muscular. Being able to move heavy loads, but also being unmovable. A characteristic of manliness in all cultures is being stronger, bigger ... since the stronger, bigger man typically has more testosterone. He looks more masculine.
No one ever criticizes a woman for being small or weak, in fact many prefer a more petite woman. The opposite is true for men. And it something any man can improve through hard work and self-discipline. Strength and size are defining characteristics for men ... they are what sets us apart. Embrace it.

There are different ways to be fit. One could argue that having a fighter's build is more primal and alpha than the typical bodybuilder shape.
I would continue to focus on your functional strength. If bulking helps, then go for it. But I wouldn't concern myself with the opinions of the types of dudes who strut around between sets of tricep push-downs.
[–]Wolfsdorf 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
What's more important to you? fighting or girls? alphas do whatever they want to do more. If you want to be a good fighter and believe you're in the ideal weight to be one, then you know the answers. As we usually preach; women are not everything. Your life comes first.
[–]BJayJay 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah fighting is something I just picked up as a freshman in high school and continued cause it helped me control anger and build confidence. You're definitely right though
[–]HellhoundsOnMyTrail 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
"Alpha" is an amorphous term. Lifting is a great way to learn how to build a habit and get positive brain chemicals going. However, if you do some looking around there is research that indicates 10-12% bodyfat is more attractive to women than 7-9%. Additionally, I don't think anyone could argue that Bill Gates isn't "alpha" or that George Clooney could pull more ass if he was only 250 and 7% bodyfat. Alpha is contextual and you can still be jacked and be a BB. My advice is to stop worrying about how you look(edit: because it sounds like you got that handled) and start concentrating on reaching the top of whatever field you're in.

I'm in my 40s. Never strong but I love working out.
My current form seems to be the most attractive to women, based on my personality. I have more of a Fight Club leanness than a swolebro build.
In the past I had 10-12# more muscle at the same body fat but I was exhausted all the time and had to eat a shit ton more every day. wasn't happy.
Now I'm lean and fast and still reasonably strong. And when I hit the beach on a surf board or paddleboard, I get plenty of attention.
5'8", 140-145#, 41yo. I am going to do a 12 week slow bulk starting September and a 12 week cut to aim to get to 145# total (3# more muscle, 3# less fat). Hopefully I can sustain it (eating) and not get exhausted.

I'm thinking though it couldn't hurt to gain 10 lbs or so. Being at our size, we're usually considered targets and not perceived as a threat at all. This shit kind of fucks with me cause it invites unwanted attention and your chances of deescalating a fight go down significantly. It's unfortunate cause it's a lose-lose situation; you win (probably get a harsher sentence when they find out you compete) or you lose and end up crippled or worse.
[–]abdada 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I don't fight because I don't find myself in places where low value males hang out.
I can't remember the last time someone tried to AMOG me. Fifteen years ago. Maybe.
A man is defined by the company he keeps. If you are surrounded by losers, you bring yourself down to their level.
Even at 21 I made sure my inner circle were winners. And my other circle is always kept beyond an arm's reach.
[–]BJayJay 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Being in a college town and underage (19), I find plenty of those low value males as the only thing there really is to do for me that's social are frat/house parties.
[–]abdada 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I hear this frequently and never saw it myself at that age. At 19 I was watching how the losers spent their time and money and integrating myself to be someone selling them what they wanted.
If you want to spend your best high energy years partying, go for it. But don't feel guilt at 31 that you don't have the energy to earn true value in the market.
There are a myriad of nearly endless ways to take advantage and profit from the lesser of the species. Even at 19. Even in a small town.
Remember that losers are drones designed to make the winners wealthier and more powerful.
[–]BJayJay 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yeah I know exactly what your talking about. But between my major (CS) and my gym commitments, this is pretty much the only way for me to interact with the opposite sex and even then it's only Friday night.
[–]abdada 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
College towns have plenty to do during weekend mornings. Practice day game. I have yet to find a college town without beautiful and low energy women out during the mornings.

The only people that really care about your cuts and your veins and how swole your rear delts are, are dudes.
If you have the body type I'm thinking of based on the description you gave in the OP, you're golden. As long as you have faintly visible abs and your arms fit tight in your sleeves (based on your size, that part might depend on good fitting clothes), you'll get girls wet.
[–]GrandmasterHurricane 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
I'll recommend strength over size any day. It's easier and a whole lot faster to get stronger than to put in size. Not only that, but crushing PR after PR makes you a lot stronger mentally too. You'll know the true extent of your physical strength as a man. Go on a good bulk and start moving heavy weights in good form.
Too many guys focus on trying to look cute in shirts rather than working on their strength. Strength has many real world applications. When you can deadlift 365 off the floor for a few reps it does a whole lot to your posture, your mental fortitude, and your confidence.
I encourage all of you to get on a good strength program, and test your limits. You don't need to be huge to be strong, just dedicated.

I'm not saying it's necessary, but I'm not saying being "big and strong" is bad either.
[–]raob11 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Looking ripped is definitely good.
Looking large and ripped is better.
[–]1sardinemanR 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Lean is always better.
Lifting is just the easy way out, so it's recommended for most.
A fighters body takes a looooot more work to develop. I know, I've done both.
This is actually a common thing when bodybuilder or NFL player types run into mma fighters. When the bodybuilder/NFL player finds out it's an MMA fighter, they generally back off. Although at first it's usually insults and throwing around weight. Look up Bas Rutten for some funny stories.
[–]TomDemian 1 points1 points1 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Why is being big attractive? Two reasons.
A girl thinks you can pick her up and throw her around.
You can actually do this.
Women want a man who can completely control them - mentally and physically. And she will always be more attracted to men who she perceives to be better at these two things.
This pretty much sums up what I was thinking, keyword being perceive.
[–]bouncyballs_arefun 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's not about being big it's about having control and being fit. It really just comes down to: don't be lazy - everyone needs fitness.
[–]brokenshelf 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I wouldn't say you need to be "big", per se. When people think "big", they usually think "boby builder big" which is incredibly hard to do. I've discovered some people fear going full Arnold, when it reality that takes years and discipline that most people don't have.
Just lift. Get bigger, but not huge.
[–]unassumingusername7 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Arnold did one too many push ups one day and BAM! Jacked for life. Don't be like him.
[–]GuitarHero07 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Basically, it's important to have low body fat, a flat stomach, good definition and toned muscles; you need to look fit and masculine. You don't necessarily have to be huge.
Consider Cristiano Ronaldo, Brad Pitt in Fight Club, any high level swimmer, Robert Downey Jr. etc. I think we can agree that most women consider these men to be very sexy. They aren't huge but they look like they are in great shape.
[–]Stythe 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Being a small dude with a good heart, mind and dedication is the same as being a fat chick who's loyal. You may have most of the important stuff, but there's a flaw there that's hard to overlook.
Besides, it's worth it to be in shape and be able to use your body. You don't have to look like Arnold, just be as big as you want. Much as I may respect challenge it takes to get jacked as fuck, I'd never want to look like that. But having a good amount of muscle and low fat is worth it. As a former fatty, I can attest.
[–]BlackHeart89 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Different women like different things. Generally, the more muscle the better. Just so long as you don't get to the point where you're walking funny.
No. It is not necessary. Just do your thing. I personally don't want to be BIG. I just want to have a nice physique and strong lifts.

Calisthenics gives you functional strength that is used in your daily life. Lifting heavy weights gives you bulk for the visual appeal. I prefer functional strength with low body fat over bulky with little definition.
[–]GrandmasterHurricane -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
There are different types of weight training. Calisthenics is really good, but it's very limited to how much it can change your body due your body getting used to your own weight and training.
[–]TimmyAgewood-1 points 10 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link
This "functional strength" crossfit bullshit is so much wankery. It only takes a few months to get every bit as "functionally" strong as modern life requires. I never once in my day to day life wish I was stronger. I'm strong as fuck yet I keep lifting to get bigger and better looking. Real shame that "bodybuilding" has a negative association.
I think he's talking about functional strength in the sense that being bulky also kind of fucks your cardio as well because of more oxygen needed to supply all the muscle, therefore making it less functional at least in my case.
[–]moosevice_dot_com 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Nothing negative with bodybuilding at all. I'm all for it.
