MMA fighter here.

Started at 38, being overweight, with the 20 years before of doing now sports at all. I do it 3-5 times a week.

10/10 can recommend.

You get:

meet alpha types
learn boxing
learn muay thai
learn BJJ
learn wrestling
learn how to give and take, since it's full contact, also when sparring
will get fit very fast
will become calm very fast
your posture and gestures will dramatically change
give girls the tingles heavily ("Gurrrr, oh my gosh, he's so dangerous.")
be interesting to other men
etc. pp.

Did Taek-Won Do 3 years, and started boxing about 3 months ago. I only changed because I moved and gym locations are important to me.

I loved both sports. Builds up your self-esteem, it builds your body, and you meet great people. I really encourage you to start it, and talk to people at your gym. Try to remember 1 new name every day. And go more than once a week, otherwise nobody will remember you. Go between 2x and 4x a week. (not more than 4, otherwise you're overtraining). Going once a week isn't enough.

Also, try to not go to the fanciest, priciest gym selling personal trainer packages. Go to your dirty, basement or former-factory industrial gym where people don't take selfies, they actually want to work out. People are much more welcoming and less self-absorbed there.

If your not afraid of taking a few hits then I would get into rugby. It's very physical and there is a position for ever body type. It's halfway through the season now, but if you contact your local club they will probably train you and let you play anyway. And teams often have gyms or special gym access so you can lift weights.

I moved interstate and had no friends. Joined a football team. Got fit, made friends. Best decision of my life.

My biggest regret from my childhood is having to give up Jujitsu after 5 years due to my family moving and not being able to find a new class. I plan on finding one as soon as I move to Seattle next month.
