"As a child happiness is your default state, you wake up and bounce around brimming with joy, if you come in crying your mother will ask "Who or what made you unhappy?"; now that you are older you have made depression your default state. You need reasons to be happy, you need to do things that make you happy, you take pills to make you happy, you try to find people that make you happy, you need to go to places that make you happy, you need things to be happy, you have to actively try to be happy. You refuse to be happy for the sake of happiness, why is this so?"
One of the biggest lies everybody tells themselves is "I need X to be happy"
What if I told you don't need a reason to be happy, how would you react? Many of you would find this concept tough to grasp, amongst all the talk of how much you lift, your n-count and political leanings you have forgotten what the aim of your life is. I'm not trying to promote fat acceptance or any-size-is-beautiful bullshit, this concept is different, what I'm trying to target is the resounding feelings of inadequacy that fills the hearts of many TRP-newbs. I'm not talking about success here; success and happiness are two very different things. Success in the gym, studies, business or women does NOT and will NOT 1:1 correlate with happiness. You, you right now, you are enough. You are enough for you to be happy. Being happy will not make you successful but what point is success if it doesn't make you happy? This isn't some hippie bullshit I'm talking about, this is the crux on which the $10 billion market for anti-depressants is founded.
Consumerist media will have hammered the concept of "you need X to be happy" into your psyche growing up (via NLP)
As a kid: "Without this toy you won't be happy" "without your princess you're incomplete" "Without a friendship group like this TV show character you're a loser" "Without this cereal your morning will be terrible"
As an adult: "I need this brand of clothing/watch/car to be happy" "I need a girlfriend to be happy" "I need to have 6 pack abs to be happy" "I need to eat colorful instagram-worthy food to be happy"
It is tiring to constantly search for things that make up happy. This is not how we are made but instead how we have made ourselves. Depression is tiring because oftentimes people will subconsciously be constantly putting themselves down and try to rationalise the source of even the iotas of happiness they experience. Try asking a child why they smile, why it is that they are happy; they will not be able to give you an answer as happiness is NOT rational so stop trying to rationalise it.
I'm not saying to not strive for these things but don't do it expecting happiness to be the end goal. You can be happy RIGHT NOW with nothing.
"“When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.” - John Lennon
Everyone has different favourite TRP-authors; mine is Pook; if you are new/old to TRP and haven't yet read the Book of Pook I'd advise you to check it out.
