"Now that that's out of the way, I remember being "that guy". Hopelessly in love with someone who didn't feel the same. I refused to believe it. We were "in love", quite madly in fact, for about 2 years, or so I thought. I was the "nice guy" she would turn to with all of her problems. The problem, was all of the "fun guys" she was seeing on the side. There was a pregnancy scare (missed period), and she finally came out and confessed she had cheated on me. In between, there was a chapter consisting of a single sentence.

It was soul crushing to have what I considered the most romantic relationship of my life (up until meeting my wife) summed up in a sentence that I wasn't even the noun in.

Fast forward about 17 years, she's now my travel agent, and uses her business acumen combined with excessive guilt to get me killer deals on cruises and other vacations. Took a 2 week trip to Alaska last year that cost me all of $350. In the end, I'll call it a draw.

EDIT 6: I've decided I'm not gonna ask her Thursday. Instead, I'm gonna buy a plastic gum ball ring like she talked about and give it to her as a promise ring, a promise I'm here to stay and won't give up on her. I think I should take this slower. So looks like I'm gonna be here for a couple weeks. After the promise ring, I'm going to keep seeing her until she agrees to give me another chance. Then I think that's when I'll drop to the knee and tell her it's the only one I need and just fucking do it.

Since everyone seems so interested in this I will keep this post up to date. While I feel weird divulging my personal life more than I thought I would have been, there's something therapeutic in chronicling the story, like an open source diary. Thank you for all your responses. I'll keep this updated.

EDIT 7: since people think me kissing her shoulder was a rejection, here's why it's significant...

It's what we do. When she's mad at me she won't kiss me to reach me a lesson. So I ask for something else I can kiss. It usually gets her laughing and and ends up kissing me anyway. The shoulder was a good thing. It means of something to come.

I cannot even believe I just read what I did. Where in any of that does it make sense to do what he is literally proposing to do? If he was having thoughts of suicide before, just wait till she acts the way she WILL act when he pops the question. Last time I checked, when you split up with somebody, you don't just ask them to meet you somewhere and to marry you.

Yeah as far as this term "beta" goes... he's not so much of a "beta" as he's more just a downright mentally challenged moron. I mean, doing all of this for a girl? I would look at someone in the face and ask them if they were considered 'slow-learning' growing up...

I already am annoyed by the term "beta" (and "alpha"). I think it's more a question of social-intuitiveness vs. obliviousness/slowness/dullness when it comes to learning your role socially. Let's change up the story and pretend this guy's best friend decided "hey dude, I don't think we're friends anymore; I'm going home and I don't want you to contact me again." (not the exact same situation but comparable). He drives out and to see his best friend. He "proposes" that they try over.

If your former best friend showed up at your door doing this you would slam the door in his face. It's not about alpha or beta, it's about not comprehending a simple, succinct, and concrete message. You don't understand? Hmm... You drive however many hours unannounced to try to change this? ...wtf...? I think my shock would trump all other variables...

Male or female: people are going to do this, and it's not healthy to be around this type of impulsive behavior. I don't know the guy in this story, I can't model up a complete picture of how (as much as I hate using these terms) "alpha" or "beta" he is. One thing I do know, he's throwing way too much logic away and performing this random stunt that we all know is ridiculously useless.

I guess the main point I'm trying to make is people like this drop major hints before pulling these big moves. Keep both eyes open for people that behave this way...
