Although there's nothing wrong with what he's doing, from the family's perspective and from any honest person's perspective, the guy isn't what you'd call a great catch for her is he? Logically, wouldn't a father want their adult daughter dating an older man (who has a good job and takes care of himself)?

Historically, fathers would marry their daughters off routinely to older, more established men. It is just in recent history that age gaps have been a US taboo. I blame the feminists for this stupidity.

While I don't blame the guy for being attracted and even fucking an 18 year old, I will say that I would be horrified of dating an 18 year old if I were 39 and had a 13 year old daughter.

I don't care where the policy came from (you may be right), I care about reality, and in reality a 40 year old man toting an 18 year old girl around is not going to be able to bring her into any adult-only venue in most of North America.

Maybe that doesn't matter to some of you, but goddamn, I'm 30 myself and I don't have time for vapid, idiotic teenagers. Can't even imagine how insufferable they will seem in another ten years.

This is unrelated, but I fucking hate the shit out of that excuse. What humans used to do in the past is such a bullshit way of excusing behaviour. Up until the past 70 or so years, hygiene and health care were crap, doesn't mean we should stop taking showers or seeing our doctor. Up until basically a hundred and fifty years ago you could own other human beings and beat them and shit. So maybe in 1850 it was cool for 40 year olds to marry teenage girls but lets not pretend that's a great precedent because of 'history'.

Seriously, my daughter's only a few months old but I'd be mightily grossed out if she brought a fucking middle aged dad to be her prom date.

There's a difference between medicinal and scientific innovation (see your doctor, don't smoke) causing change, and social changes (all fighting is wrong always, looking at breasts in public is rape, you can only date someone + or - 5 years from your age) that are silly cultural changes which society now calls 'morals' for no reason. History isn't always a valid reason for doing something, but you should understand why we changed course before saying history is wrong.

P.S: As a new dad, it's natural you're going to be anxious about a lot of stuff for a while. Beware going all post-modern because of that. And congrats on the kid!

They're not all that silly though. Innovation changes society. We live 3x longer than people did in the middle ages as a result of innovations and we can shift the goal posts. 100 years ago a fifth grade education was fine. Now, socially, it's unspeakable to drop out at 11. Our benchmarks move. A 38 year old and an 18 year old is gross and if I was that kid's dad I'd be fucking rageful.

She needs a stern talking what a sugar daddy is and that she is whoring herself out. She is the daughter, the father should talk to her.
