My 17 y/old son recently got his 2nd degree black belt in TKD and kicks my ass in Boxing class every Tues. night. The National review article is correct, we have to make a concerted effort to raise our sons with masculine lessons in order to counteract feminine societal pressures.

@2016redditor I've been saying this for almost a decade now, good to see science is backing it up.

The situation is ever graver than you have imagined, mark my words, when most Millenials reach their late 40's and beyond, deaths by way of falling down stairs at home, or simply slipping on the floor at work, will balloon to unheard of proportions. Millennial's have spent far too little time getting bumps and bruises during their childhoods, meaning the bones in their bodies are not strong and may as well be chicken bones, due to all the "seat time" they have built up, in comparison to previous, more active, generations.

Here is a study, showing how, what I have said, is a very possible outcome for Millennial's and its anyone's guess how Public Health Policy will deal with them later:

Essex University, studied how strong 315 children, at 10-years of age, were in 2008 and then compared them with 309 children, in the same age range, using data collected in 1998. They found the following:

-The number of sit-ups a 10-year-olds could do declined by 27.1%, between 1998 and 2008

-Arm strength fell by 26% and grip strength by 7%, between 1998 and 2008

-One in 20 children in 1998 could not hold their own weight, when hanging from wall bars. In 2008 one in 10 could not do so and another 10% of that 2008 cohort refused to even try the activity

Now add in neck and back problems from texting and you have a huge public health disaster on the horizon. So, as I said above, basically a fall down a flight of stairs or a heavy box falling on them, when they get older, is far more likely to kill them, INSTANTLY, than in previous generations. Their bones have sustained far less impact over the same amount of time, versus people born just 2 decades earlier. Their bones will be as fragile as porcelain when they reach 40+ years old and what's REALLY funny is that insurance companies currently raise rates for people over 40. So that begs the question, what will happen when these kids hit 40+, based on the current insurance polices? Honestly, they should be completely uninsurable when they reach 40.

Now try to imagine how the military is going to deal with this public health issue affecting service age Millenial's. The most realistic solution is more drones, more butt-in-the-seat time for soldiers and a higher emphasis on "college academics" so they can do more butt-in-the-seat military jobs. In a scenario like this, what difference would it make to have an out of shape man or a physically weak woman in these military jobs? Not much , especially when the whole cohort is already filled to the brim with physical weaklings to being with.

The body only works as hard as it has to. And can adapt to what's required of it more than most of us realize. I think they even dug of corpses of English longbowmen once an found the bones in their shoulders were larger from having spent a life drawing back the bows. Meanwhile Astronauts are wheelchair bound when they get back from space even if they did lot's of cardio up there.

Grew up in sports and doing construction w pops afterschool on weekends. Surpassed pops around 17 when he was 48. Still close when it comes to wrestling but that's about it.

This may be an unpopular opinion, probably because I have no medical proof or science backing it up; but I think it may have something to do with the women we are having kids with nowadays.

I have a theory that males get most of their genes from their mothers while females get most of their genes from their fathers. Considering that, back in the days, we were not presented with media which sways our perceptions of beauty, males just banged whatever chick they could find.

An image that comes to mind is that of a short, skinny farmer, and his much bigger wife. So when they have a boy, he'll be huge. It goes beyond this too; for example, if you ever go to Africa, there are many skinny, average height Black males with a few bigger guys here and there. On the other hand, in the US, there are many Black males with large builds, which may be attributed to breeding back in the slave era. The largest male slaves were forced to mate with the largest female slaves to produce bigger, stronger offspring.

Fast forward to the present day, the golden standard of beauty in the Western world is slim, feminine, Blondes. So, while maybe not everyone will land "hot" blondes, slim, petite figures have been the standard of beauty and what many men have been after for a few decades.

So assume many men at 5'7" are seeking women that are slim and petite, it's likely that a woman with a slim build at 5'2" would meet that criteria. Assuming a son was conceived, and that he may end up taller than his mother, he probably would grow no taller than 5'7" either (and that's being generous with my theory that most of the genes come from the mother).

Now, the previous example is as if a woman at that height is willing to conceive with a man at 5'7", but as we all know nowadays, even females that are 5 foot nothing demand that their partners be a 6 foot minimum. And if my theory holds some weight, it doesn't matter as much that her partner is 6 feet tall, she still carries short genes and will produce a short, weak child.

Additionally, since slim and petite figures are the standard of beauty, that leaves a lot of women who would produce stronger offspring in the dust.

I had more to add, but someone with actual medical or scientific background will probably come and blow my theory out of the water.

The National Review seemed to blame the parents a lot. I mean sure the way you raise your kid will influence him, but isn't the cornerstone of being a man to be independent? I mean my dad taught me absoloutely nothing about being masculine (except how to raise you voice like an army officer, and to stck up for your friends against your enemies, etc) I taught myself about lifting, I taught myself what stoicism was, I found out about the joys of sport by myself, I decided to become a youth cadet. You can have all the strength in the world but without independence you'll always be a slave.

The idealized "tough guy" will be at the mercy of the above, despite being physically stronger.
