This might be off topic but I’ve had a few thoughts about this #MeToo trend and a disturbing number of women I know posting about being the victim of either sexual assault or sexual harassment. I’m not a feminist and view rape culture as a farce as no person of any moral standing considers rape to be an acceptable I practice; but, with that being said I do not believe the present state of affairs in society is morally sound. The question of course becomes what created this situation where sexual offenses are seemingly more and more commonplace?

Was it the creation of hookup culture? Was it third wave feminism? Is there some moral ineptitude being perpetrated in today’s nihilistic society?

My feeling is that it is some sort of combination of all of the above, and perhaps a return to traditional values is what it takes to curb this problem. On the legal front, I think those proven guilty of rape should face harsher sentences if not the death penalty. After all, our criminal justice system is largely based on the notion of reciprocal justice, and how can you equate the taking of one’s free will over their body with any amount of time? It can only be considered equitable to the loss of life, but I am talking of a standard of absolute proof like the Brock Turner case.

I do feel that both sexes have contributed to this problem, with both seeking and accepting more promiscuity and making it as simple as adding an app on your phone for an easy hookup. We men are guilty of seeking the seemingly more promiscuous women amongst us, while leaving some modest women at times in a space of invisibility. Women are guilty of considering a comment from a less attractive man as being sexual harassment, while considering the same remark from an attractive man to be flirting.

What went wrong is that hookup culture has negatively impacted how we view each other, and how we view ourselves. We need to look no further than how people approach relationships today, how many a tinder or dating site profile rotates on what a person expects from a partner? Why do we pray for a good spouse, instead of asking to be a good spouse? The egocentric narrative of our day, the narcissism of social media, and the promise of people accepting our pasts has made this generation morally deficient. In the face of the #MeToo trend we face not a problem of hypergamy, The Wall, an 80/20 rule, etc. what we face is a problem of systematically reduced morality. TRP acknowledges the things in the last sentence, and perhaps it going more mainstream is what it will take for everyone to get sick of the current state of affairs.
