how do you feel about chivalry and its place today? I've been thinking about it recently and it has really made me think about how interesting the concept is now.
I personally have always been a very chivalrous person, I also consider myself a decent/good/nice person. Now I guess chivalry would mostly apply to men doing things for women, but of course chivalry really applies to really anyone being decent to any other human being. I used to really go out of my way to be a gentleman and have good manners. My dad is older and English so he brought me up as proper as he could and a lot of it has stuck. I mean I'm 25 and from being an early age up til even now people comment about how nice it is I just say "please", "May I", and "Thank you". Another thing I do is not swear ever even though I'm not even religious. I don't wear hats indoors, etc.
It's getting harder and harder for me specifically for privileged girls generally who are 35 years old or younger, because they are just so blaze and nonchalant about it. I do still do nice things because I feel I'm doing it for the person not the gender and its the right way to do things; but younger women today are making it so hard. I unfortunately find myself sometimes going out of my way now to be discourteous or what I deem discourteous like not holding the door (most people probably are used to now, so they don't really realize because people are much less nice then they used to be).
Now you can use millions of things to be chivilrous/kind/well-mannered but I think the "holding the door for someone" is the easiest and simplest one to look at.
Interesting things I've noticed and how I've changed.
-I hardly ever see a woman do a chivalrous thing
-Women under 45 are so much less likely to show any gratitude
-Many will even look at you weird if you do
-I see men helping doing nice things for women and other men all the time
-I now really only open doors or hold doors open for men/kids, someone carrying something big and heavy (generally a man anyway), or older women like 45+. Because those listed are the only ones who seem to appreciate it.
I totally get that this can all sound "beta" to use an overused word, but I'm really not one. I won't let a girl trample all over my feelings and have a woman take advantage. I'm talking about doing the right nice things for people in your everyday life.
At my core i feel i need to keep doing nice things anyway because screw those women, keep holding the door for them because its the right thing to do and screw them if they don't appreciate it i know I'm doing the right thing. Being or doing something well mannered or chivalrous is just the ways things should be done man or woman and I know its not fair to expect appreciation from everyone or anyone which is why i feel i should keep doing it.
It just really feels like good manners are dying and I have heard older people saying that since i was a young age. Which is probably why I have gotten and still get a ton of compliments for doing things that 20-30-40-or 50 years ago wouldn't be complimented on because it was normal and just what youre supposed to do. Also I know women are not all to blame, men have to share some of it, and just technology and the psychological ramifications of technology and the way the world works today; but the lions-share i think goes to women in terms of gender.
sorry i really meant for this to be shorter but i guess this is a big pet peeve Im just going to have to learn to live with.
any comments criticisms opinions welcome and encouraged.
thank you
** tl&dr- Women it seems to me today are really making it hard to be just nice to or give them common courtesies.**
