Always a great scene. Also love the one where Pacino bitches out Spacey.

I always thought it was so strange to see Spacey being talked to like that. Normally he's the one who'd be bitching someone out.

Man you can only imagine a scene in which Ricky Roma went up against Baldwin trying to tirade him. Would have been an epic battle.
[–]Senior Endorsed ContributorNightwingTRP 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I've seen the equivalent in the real world. Roma always wins because Baldwin/Spacey can't afford to fire him. And ultimately, they don't tend to care too much if the numbers on the board are good.

Bullshit!!!!, the character of Alec Baldwin is full of shit. Is not what people say is what they do (including here girls, family, politics you name it) , if he were to work with the leads of the «machine» he would have failed, the leads were dead. They should have challenged him on the spot, to see how he does with the bad leads, if fact bet against him, but they did not because they have them by the balls, so they have to listen to the corporate bullshit. it is similar to the wizard of Oz, he will put a show to impress you but there is nothing behind it to support it.
The worlds is full of bullshitters, if you look carefully you will notice that they DO NOT DO what they say, tv evangelist and politicians are a prime example of this. The leads were given to the machine with the solely purpose to see him fail, he was being fucked and he had no clue, that is the real problem, we need to remove the blindfold that has been put on us to see how bad we are being fucked and to put an end to that, that is the purpose of the red pill.

Well part of the point of this scene in the movie is that right before he starts in, you hear Baldwin ask if everyone's there, and then say "fuck it, I'm going anyway."
Indeed this is a show put on by Baldwin's character. He even has the props (brass balls) ready for the spectacle.
The point isn't who's saying the message in this case, it's the message.
Besides that, your analysis of public figures being generally 'do as i say, not as I do' is spot on.
Thanks for the reply!

Ty op. Needed this at the end of the day.

My pleasure, I hope it kicked your ass into gear the same way it did mine.
I went from planning to spend a quiet weekend at home, to two dates with plates, lifting heavy when I wanted to least, and putting some serious time in with my business.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

Yup, this clip always gets me pumped the fuck up. Time to get off the fucking Internet and put some work in.

Hasn't been as physical as I'd like since I'm recovering from an injury, but it's definitely been productive in other aspects. Hope it's been good for you too, bud.

e the Alpha, beta's, and omega's in the cast? Do you outplay any of them, some of them, or none of them? This is how I will be approaching my weekend here on the East coast where I have 2 parties to attend. Already have an idea of the cast of characters that are gonna be my competition. Who else will show up? Am I going to be the Lemon, Spacey, Pacino, or Baldwin? Great motivational post OP.
Shit, that is one, heavyweight cast.

Excellent point, Pacino is definitely the true Alpha in this movie in my opinion. I absolutely love his performance.
Hope the weekends been working out for you, thanks for replying!

Amazing part of the Baldwin scene is that it wasn't in Mamet's script. Apparently much of it was ad-libbed. Classic scene. To this day I tell people, "coffee is for closers."

Having been someone who has worked in a numbers driven sales environment... I recognise the entire speech from start to finish. I also thoroughly enjoyed the film (a few times.)
It's a great scene, but this is short sighted advice. The thing about that sort of environment is that it's always a numbers game to newbies... but the smart salesman, someone who has been round the block as shown by Al Pacino "Patel? WTF is this? PATEL?" knows there's more to the game than just the raw effort that a newbie will put in. The boss has a wilful ignorance of the variables in play and they know it. They tend to become irritated and/or ignore those speeches by the guys at the top because they know it's taken the years of experience to figure out where best to expend their effort... and when the boss tries to pressure them into wasting their time - "How am I gonna make a living out of these deadbeats?"
Now you're probably asking, why would a boss not look after his long term employees? Why give them a speech that only pisses them off? It's because high pressure sales as an environment has probably the highest employee turnover of any industry. 80-90% of people simply can't make it. So they're constantly dealing with newbies who need to play that numbers game to gain the experience needed to identify how to use their time best. So it's a rational choice and Red Pill is similar... most guys are in the anger phase and need to go out and waste their time for a while getting rejected and getting over their approach anxiety etc.
People actually react in three ways to this. Some who've earned their stripes in the environment just smirk at Baldwin's speech, ignore him and carry on with what we know works. My weekend mindset? I'm gonna get cleaned up and head out in a few hours, I'm gonna hang out with my mate, see a film with him, get some food and catch up, chat about our workouts, call him a beast. Then I'm gonna call a plate and tell her to come over and suck my dick. My sales number will go on the board, but I'm not doing it your way. Keep perspective gents - know what you're aiming for. There's no point achieving some numbers if you can't make a living long-term. Motivate yourself to learn and achieve smarter. After all, you don't want to be spending all your weekends working in the SMP - you want to be minimising that effort.
You're absolutely correct. I've worked in both media sales and industrial sales, and I agree that sales is literally a meat grinder when it comes to employee turnover. You either fuck, or walk.
Numbers are just numbers - and nobody wants to have to be 'on' all the time.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Or you just enjoy the scene as entertainment as it is and don't read too much into it.
That said, I agree, stop jerking off and do what need to be done.
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, indeed.

Cool. If you want to post something, and you are a beginner, post field reports.
Newb FRs are very valuable to us, because they provide other newbs with a view of what their first successes should look like. This helps them to feel like they can succeed, instead of just seeing a stream of FRs from advanced plate spinners, talking about crazy shit they don't think they will ever be able to do.

Indeed.
Baldwin's character is literally doing a performance here, as I mentioned to another character. It's explicitly stated that he's operating outside of reality in his speech. It's interesting to note how many people would react to this with motivation, and how many people simply would want to be Baldwin's character - which in reality, shouldn't be anyone's true goal.
Thank you for taking the time to respond.
