My MRP “status”: Lurker for about 6-7 mos, posted one OYS. MRP has been a catalyst for some real change, and starting to show some outward effects, some of which I talk about there.
Last weekend was a shit show. An argument about my going out blows up when I decide to just ignore her and leave the house without finishing the discussion. Cue meltdown.
Bit of background.
A lot of shit between my wife (30) and I (31) relates to trust issues.
Trust issue 1.) I cheated on her when we were engaged, a ONS, about 4 months before the wedding. On a work trip, in one of my first forays into adult life where young professionals, alcohol, and a relaxed atmosphere mixed. Bad decisions were made, for both life and career. I groveled and pleaded for forgiveness and we went ahead with getting married. This still causes her to freak out if I go out where alcohol is involved and I go incommunicado.
Trust issue 2.) Her family gives her shit about everything in her life, and she feels like everyone close to her will inevitably betray or disappoint her (relates to #1 obviously, but also goes way back to before I did that). Her mom is a delusional narcissist, and her three sisters are almost as bad. There are myriad reasons that run deep, back to childhood. Present day, superficial things can cause unbelievable drama. Our busy-ness with kids causes us to miss family things, or to be picky about timing (e.g. to facilitate naps), etc. These superficial things are the catalysts for her family basically thinking my wife is a bitch who doesn’t care about them, and letting her know it whenever they can. My wife feels this is a betrayal and that those closest to her abandoned her once life got hard (when she had young kids).
Other background: I had a good group of friends in college. My wife and I got married about a year out from college, started having kids right away. With a wife, kids, mortgage, job, business school and a BP attitude, I missed out on most of the 20’s carousing my friends did before they each hitched off, and we’ve drifted. They live in other cities. Without new friends or activities, I’ve acutely felt the growing gaping hole where an adult male social life should be. The desire to address this, almost as much as a lukewarm bedroom, was a huge draw to MRP for me. Over the last few years, and in a manner appropriate for the weaksauce man that I am/was, I’ve lamented this lack to my wife. (Along the way, I covertly blamed her for the limitations she placed on my life, and expected these expressions of my feelings to cause her to address my problem.)
Last week a couple of these guys were in town. I’d reached out but didn’t hear from them for most of the week, and was admittedly bummed out. In a lot of ways I feel like I’d been “left behind” and these guys no longer gave a shit if I was around to hang out. I express this to my wife, and tell her I’m writing those guys off and moving on. Friday rolls around, I hear from one of them that they are going to watch the NCAA tourney at a bar in the city. I decide I want to go, and I wanted to Uber so I could drink and not worry about driving. She gets annoyed that “I had just written them off, but are now willing to suck up to these guys the minute they call.” (True? Probably.) She starts giving me some shit, wants me to drive so that I don’t drink too much and “come home at a reasonable time.” We’re out at dinner with the kids, and I’m pissed so I STFU (in a completely butthurt way). I check out and shut down. Car ride home from dinner is tense and silent. I put the kids to bed, and then she tells me “you’re such an asshole” and “are so full of shit,” and “you should just do what you want because that’s what you’re going to do anyway.”
So I do. I got an Uber and left without responding.
Cue text fight.
- Her (8:02pm): Maybe you can crash at your parent’s house
- Her (8:24pm): Or I could take kids with me to a hotel
- Me (8:25pm): No thanks. Those are not good ideas
- Her (8:27pm): Well your current behavior isn’t a good idea and I’m not interested
- Me (8:28pm): I don’t know what to say. I don’t think you’re being reasonable.
- Her(8:29pm): Well that could’ve been a conversation…. But in your typical way you reacted obnoxiously
- Her(8:29pm): And I’m over your antics
- Her(8:30pm): Tired of being in this position
- Her(8:31pm): But hope you’re really enjoying yourself. Glad you don’t seem to mind it being at my expense.
- Me (8:47pm): Just got here.
- Me (8:47pm): I don’t know what to do about these situations.
- Her (8:56pm): I think it’s clear you just don’t care enough to do that right thing
- Me (9:14pm): That is not true. Game just started.
- Her (9:52pm): Well we need to discuss so please don’t come home drunk
- Her (10:16pm): When are you leaving
- Me (10:19pm): It’s second half, don’t know how long
- Her (10:20pm): Are you staying til the end
- Me (10:25pm): Planning to
- Her (11:00pm): Update?
- Her (11:18pm): ????????
- Me (11:20pm): Game over. Finishing this beer.
- Her (11:20pm): Did you order an uber? That seems to usually take hours
- Her (11:40pm): ?
- Me (11:45pm): Closing out
- Her (11:55pm): So you’re going to be home about 1:00 … 5 hours later…. Hmm
- Her (11:56pm): Going to try to sleep now after an unnecessarily stressful night. Please sleep on the couch and we can talk tomorrow.
- Me (11:459m): In cab. No thanks.
- Her (12:00am): I’m asking you to please be a gentleman.
- Me (12:00m): No you aren’t
- Her (12:00am): Respecting your wife would be a gentleman like thing to do
- Me (12:00m): Sleeping on the couch isn’t gentlemanly. And isn’t respectful to anyone.
- Her (12:05am): Well I don’t want to share a bed with you or be near you.
- Her (12:06am): I would sleep with the kids but I have a baby to take care of
- Her (12:08am): But you probably don’t care about that in your present dick of the year mood.
End convo. I did not sleep on the couch.
The next day we, of course, had hash it out.
I went bluepill (or comfort mode? I don’t know the difference) I told her my true feewings - I get frustrated and frankly pissed when she tries to put limits on what I view as “completely normal behavior – going out for drinks with college friends to watch basketball, and wanting to drink enough that driving is a bad idea.” I pour out my lamentation for the dearth of a social life. (Yes, I am absolutely positive that I am never less attractive to her than when I seek comfort from her about being a loser with no friends).
She says she acknowledges that she is fucked up about trust issues, and admits she knows that she was the reason our social lives withered. She reminds me that I’m part of the trust problem, and that that simply means I don’t have the option of ignoring her feelings the way I did. She also talks about how, because of her upbringing, I’m the only consistent person in her life, and that she feels an inevitability that I will disappoint her, or betray her in some way that things with us will blow up. She says she tries to trust me and move away from that, but thinks she has a deep down expectation that people she let’s get close will disappoint her.
For the record, she’s a great partner, a terrific mom. I’m interested in figuring out the issues involved here, because I feel like both a beta bitch, and an asshole, and I can’t seem to find a way between or around those alternatives.
I don’t know what this is exactly. This is probably a victim puke.
Am I a dick for just leaving and doing what I want? The kids were in bed and I neglected none of those duties.
Am I a bitch for feel sadnesses about my social life, and complaining about it to my wife? I know the answer to the second part. (N.B.: I fully recognize that I sound like a complete pussy when I lament that “my fwiends don’t like me anymore. Boo hoo” Foul-smelling validation seeking. I haven’t figured out how to square my legitimate need/desire for a social life with my larger and more pressing issue of insecurity around being left out on the playground or whatever it is.)
How far does a man go with being comforting / supportive when your wife has some issues?
