Went on an overnight hiking trip with my gf (her first) and another couple (very experienced). It's certainly a challenging hike, not terribly steep, but technical (rock fields) and long (~4 hours up) for my girl.
We were packing the night before, I started getting everything together that was obvious: tent, sleeping bag, etc. and I guess at one point I tell her to pack some clothes. I go and check on her after she comes over to me looking agitated, and she loses it. "I don't have any of the right clothing, you do this all the time but I don't" and starts crying. RP kicks in and I just grab her into a big hug and hold her for a bit until she stops crying. She's still pouty, so I let her put herself to bed and keep packing. I didn't really understand what the problem was, because all she really needed was to grab a Tshirt out of the closet, we've done plenty of hikes before, she has workout clothes...afterwards I discovered it may have been that she was just overwhelmed about a new experience. Regardless, I think her behaviour was childish and counterproductive to getting everything packed, and then when she complained on the hike about how I forgot to pack specific food items to our friends and "if only we'd made a list" I just stared at her and resisted the urge to say "If you hadn't of freaked out like a child and helped me pack, perhapes your XXX would have been packed instead of left at home".
Fast forward past the hike (it went okay) to dinner at my folks place the night after the hike. She starts talking about the trip, complaining about things that I forgot to pack...and talking openly about her shirt "melt down". She even recounted two other meltdowns that she had on the hike where things were getting too tough for her and she couldn't do it. Why is she doing this? To get sympathy from my mother?
So two things, how could I have handled her initial freakout, and subsequent shit tests on the hike better? (AKA do I call her out?) And, why does she talk about her melt downs in front of my family?
EDIT: and yes, I recognize in myself that I find it unfair that the perfect execution of the trip lay entirely on my shoulders. I know that probably wont change, but I want a PARTNER not a DEPENDENT. I'll get those when I have kids.
