So... I witnessed my eldest daughter (7) do something truly horrific to my other two daughters (2,4) yesterday and I was disciplining her (sent to room, privileges revoked). Eldest can also be a real shit with scratching, biting, running away when being disciplined.

Anyway, the problem is that my wife consistently jumps in and defends the eldest and downplays the shit she's been up to. So instead of disciplining the eldest I'm dealing with a clueless wife who has stuck herself in the middle and is denying any of the shit that just happened in front of my eyes actually happened. Eldest uses this dynamic deliberately to get away with everything.

My wife's behavior in this case was so ridiculous that I finally had enough. Later that evening I started a conversation with my wife to see if she has any suggestions how she thinks I can improve my discipline strategy. She's SAHM with the three young kids so I figured my approach must conflict with what she's attempting or that she has some suggestions. The conversation was useless--no actual advice other than I guess don't do what you're doing. Thanks. So helpful. The interesting part was that it sort of came out that apparently my discipline style is identical to her dad's. So now I think that she's deciding to refight her old battles with her dad through me. At least I think that fits my wife's behavior in these situations very well.

I don't think I noticed the "My wife has decided I'm her dad and is fighting a war by proxy" mentioned in the sidebar readings, but maybe I wasn't sensitive to that angle. Can anyone suggest readings that might help?
