5x5 lifting?

5x5 is a great starting program. It focusses on the main core lifts. It is strength building workout, where as 3x10 would be a hypertrophy workout (focusing on looks). Basically it is easy to follow so it is recommend for beginners.

5x5 is recommended because for beginners they need to build up their strength before focusing on purely aesthetics.

With 5x5 you mainly do the big and heavy lifts (Squats, Bench, Deadlift, Overhead Press, Bent Over Rows) and with 3x10 programs you do isolation movements focusing on individual muscles (Bicep curls, calf raises, lat pull downs, rows, tricep pulldowns, etc.)

It's recommended to start with 5x5 as that will help you increase your strength so when you do start lifting for aesthetics you'll be able to get more results (trying to get big benching 135lbs vs 225lbs).

5x5 = low rep strength training. 3x10 = high rep hypertrophy. There is little point trying to get big by doing loads of reps with a low weight. Have some patience and build a foundation of strength first (at least with the big compounds) before maximising your hypertrophy. You will still make physical gains training at 5x5 and you can always do 3x10 for arms at the end of a workout.

good balance of reps for volume (hypertrophy) and low enough to use a stimulating weight.

Starting Strength is a great program too (it's 3x5)

Lots of good 5x5 programs, but #1 thing is CONSISTENCY.

Look up 5x5 Ice Cream Fitness and other programs. It's one of the most popular strength programs that also lets you pack a nice amount of muscle.

I just downloaded the 5x5 Stronglifts app for Android and it is perfect. Takes all the guesswork out of my workouts, which is what I love.

What makes it better than 3 x 10 for instance?

It's not necessarily better, it's only better if you give a shit about developing a good base strength that can improve your hypertrophy potential in the future, if you just want a six pack and defined muscles then go with a bro split or whatever and diet down to 13% or less.

The difference is pretty simple, train 5x5 for a month, then pick a weight that you can complete a big 4 lift 5x5 with not a rep more, then next week do 3x10 with the same weight, same exercise, most likely you won't be able, unless you're abusing noob gains of course.
