Pick a fraternity focused on networking and business, not partying and "college life" - you can form a loose social network and attend 3-5 fraternities' parties whenever you want simply by befriending people in those fraternities.

what cues I should look for

Sober house, emphasis on GPA and Academics but not a predominantly beta fraternity. These are the people most likely to succeed and be starting businesses together in college or later in life, the connections you get there will be worth 10,000 lays. Hooking up in college is easy, you don't need to be going to parties for it. Focus on your future.

You want to evaluate frats for connections first, getting laid and partying second. There are good answers here, but I would add that you should look the alumni from the top 3-4 frats you're interested in. Lots of notable alumni is a very good thing and will give you a huge advantage after graduation in your job hunt or in starting a company. I myself joined a new-ish, 'ethnically focused' fraternity and the connections I have nationwide (even worldwide) after graduation are fantastic.

You could ask girls. Or ask various people. There is usually a consensus of which frats are the top tier and which are lower tiers. Don't use greek rank or any websites, those are just petty crap. If you're allowed to then go to some of their early parties. They sometimes let pnms in to see what it's like. You will figure it out quick. Talk to brothers of each one as well.

The fraternity/sorority dynamic really depends on where you go to college. I went to a large state school with nearly 30 frats and about half as many sororities. Pick a house where the guys are down to earth, work out, and are into sports. Pick a house that throws parties with sororities that are at least "middle tier" and above. Check out parties at a lot of different houses during the first few weeks of school. Rule out any house full of nerds, fat guys, beta types. A house that's a little bit smaller but has quality guys is better than a huge house full of dudes that are mostly lame.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet: the houses with the most history are the ones that will give you the most business/networking opportunities, so you want one that has been around for a long time. The quality of the alumni and "old guys" can make a big difference. Do NOT join a colony or newer house. My fraternity had been in the same house since the early 1900s and had a number of famous brothers, along with brothers who weren't famous but became very wealthy, over the years. It really does pay off.

The ones with the highest GPA. Frats of all kinds attract women. Plan for your future, not for fucking girls two points higher.

Or the frats with less drug influence. Coked-up chicks help no one.
