You don't know you're being confident in the moment. If you have to stop and think in the moment, that is not confidence. Only later self-reflection will be able to figure out if you're confident. True confidence comes out of a feeling of flowing without realising it.

There is no such thing as “confidence” as a general term. Confidence is context-specific.

A highly-skilled heart surgeon can do surgery with his eyes closed because he's confident in that area but he might suck at doing public speaking.

To get confident you need skill set and experience.

You don't seek external validation
you're aware of but unreactive to most things, people, situations
you act, not talk
you're disagreeable
people want to be around you, follow you, do things for you,
others seek your approval
you don't try to act confident, you just are

I found through peacocking that there's a huge difference between actually being confident and people picking up on your confidence.

I went out with a really edgy mohawk (had some skulls shaved into the side) and got so many IOIs at bars and girls were taking their time to talk to me. Got a couple numbers and a girl immediately came over that night.

I was blown away. I literally changed nothing about my personality, just my style. But they all commented on how confident I was.

So even if you are confident, by the virtuous definition, you also have to appear confident in the superficial sense which is contradictory imo but it's the truth.
