It needs time to grow into it. You have to push yourself. See it as a personal growth challenge.

The most important takeaway in my case was the realization that by being a "nice guy" I was actually not being nice at all, but a covert contract making, manipulative petty little bitch.

Just start speaking your mind and saying what you really feel with other people, at first you'll face the fear of losing them but you'll be surprised on how quickly they react and start to actually respect you.

Read No More Mr. Nice Guy. Examine yourself. Figure out what flaws and limitations are affecting your behaviors and attitudes and are causing you to be a Nice Guy. This journey might take a long time and might require a lot of reading and soul-searching. Writing after self-reflection seems to help too (from what I've read it even re-wires your brain).
