Honestly? Most 45 year olds can't handle Thailand.

I seriously doubt an 18 year old can either.

You'll be alone-- a million miles away from anyone that truly gives a shit about you, surrounded by whores and grifters with a goal of taking all of your money.

Odds are, you'll leave Thailand a year or two after arriving, with a drug addiction and permanent consequences to your long term health.

You'll probably have a great time getting to that point, and you'll be young enough to recover, so you'll have that going for you, unlike most middle aged dudes who manage to limp back to the states after getting ripped off overseas.

South East Asia is great fun, you could easily move around from country to country spending a few months in each without having to get a visa.

The problem with trying to be productive is how much fun it is. If you do it, I recommend finding a quiet clean hostel or airbnb during the week while you work, then hang out with all the partiers at the end of the week.

I haven't been to Thailand but have been to plenty of other countries, the drugs are there but you're not going to get involved unless you seek them out. Most travellers are content with alcohol.

Ultimately having an experience like that as a young man will be eye opening. I say go for it and don't restrict yourself to just Thailand. Also stock up on condoms and always use them (no matter how nice the european girl seems)

Backpacked though south east asia and didn't see very many crazy drugs. ( Wasn't looking either) hopped from country to country with free visas, met girls and friends along the way. Also met alot of people( as well as one friend I was traveling with) that were working remotely while traveling. Sounds like the dream to me, get paid in American bucks and watch the magic of currency exchange! I would never trade those experiences for anything and would highly recommend everyone to go live and breath in third world countries. Life Is just different, but yet the same. People are nicer when they have less, and being out in rural country sides really taught me alot

Good plan as long as you know this is your purpose and what you want.

Keep your job, focus on your purpose(web dev) and build that skill out well. Become the best at it you can be.

Also, work on your game in the meantime in the US.

I just visited Bangkok in August, the place was chaotic and honestly felt like a third-world city compared to Shanghai. Gov't did a bad job at planning and organizing, traffic was extremely congested, so let alone other aspects of life. People generally don't speak English, and in fact, more Thai people can speak Chinese than English (due to a lot of Chinese tourists -- they basically depend on that for income).

I don't think Thailand is the place for a young person like you. You've got the language barrier and a highly underdeveloped social, legal and economic structure. Chances are, whatever you wanna do for your career (finance, legal, IT, etc), Thailand will not offer you anything worthy. What's the point of getting out of Canada and ending up somewhere shittier?

If you just want to experience Asia while working remotely, consider Singapore, Taiwan, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, or even Hongkong (not too sure about Hongkong's long-term prospects given recent turmoil) -- in any of those cities, you'll find more English speakers than you'll do in Thailand.

I would go to SEA for travel - Vietnam, Cambodia, Burma, Thailand, but I won't really live there as a young person. This is the time for you to build your worldview, and you wanna build it in places that are thriving. Under today's capitalistic socio-economic framework, rich places get richer, poor places get poorer.

EDIT: The west over-glorified "Thailand" with The Hangover series. In reality, it offers very little. As an RP man with abundance, Thailand felt like a shit hole. Don't get brainwashed by the "Thai hooker" narrative, you can bang hot chicks anywhere. Walk along Soi Cowboy street in Bangkok (just google img it) and you'll see that most white men there are in their 50s and have a huge beer belly. Put that into perspective and ask yourself, why the fuck do you wanna be there?

Manosphere hypes up southeast asia as being some paradise and yeah it can be fun to visit (went to Thailand for 2 weeks in college) but I wouldn't ever live there full time.

How bout you spend a week on vacation there before committing to moving there full time...

Thailand is run by a military junta right now that isn't fond of foreigners. I was just there for 6 months. For your age bracket and financial situation, you can't stay there more than 180 days per calendar year. You'll have to switch countries periodically.

What I think you should do instead, is just go blow the 20K fucking hookers and drinking everyday. You'll be balling hard for 6 month. You'll get to fuck the hottest gogo girls for reasoanble prices. When you come back to the US, go to college, get a comp sci degree, get work exp/internships while in college, and then find a company that will let you work remotely (after you pay your dues or whatever)

THIS WAY, when you inevitably return, you will be able to BALANCE your worklife/nightlife and not become an alcoholic or blow all your money on hookers.

Lastly, you need to do fuckloads of research. Thai society operates a lot differently than the US. Laws don't really mean shit, you have no legal protection, yada yada.
