I usually like evo-psych answers. "Scarcity Mentality" probably served some useful purpose in the caveman days. Nature expects you to fall in love and stick around and take care of the girl and make sure her children can fend for themselves and take their place in the tribe.

Edit: Almost every personality trait is useful or adaptive under some particular set of circumstances. The paranoid folks successfully evaded traps and hid out until the danger subsided. When you don't have options, of any kind, your brain goes into preservation mode, be it money, bitches, food etc.
